A recent two-part Lifesite news article on Fr. Larry Richards has provided some additional context on an aggressive polemic he delivered some time back against a Catholic family he disapproved of. The article also included a video where Fr. Richards rails against Catholics who criticise Pope Francis, arguing that they need to convert and that by criticising the Pope, they have left the Church.

However you feel about Fr. Richard’s content & style, I believe this priest needs our prayers.

If you haven’t heard him speak, he is on EWTNs Open line on most Thursdays talking about evangelisation. Call in if you have a question to ask or need something explained that he has said.

I’m not US based, so can’t unfortunately.

What are your thoughts on the video in the link?

I haven’t listen to it and haven’t made up my mind if I will. There are a lot more important things that I have to do. If you can’t call then email openline@ewtn.com and put Fr Larry or Thursday in the subject line.

What I can say is that it is very rarely beneficial to criticise someone in public. That doesn’t matter if it is your spouse or the pope. The way information or rather disinformation spreads in social media, or better called social madness, you never really know what was first talked about or the situation where it was relevant.

Meh. He’s entitled to his opinion just like anyone else. I’ve heard priest say all kinds of things I disagree with. No need to make a big deal out of it.

Pope Francis is fine. Fr. Larry Richards is fine.

Look at the way the article begins. I think we should be more concerned about people who write – and read – such drivel:
May 7, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – The increasingly condemning and accusatory behaviour of Fr. Richards, Fr. Thomas Rosica, Fr. Martin, Cardinal Cupich, Bishop McElroy, Cardinal Tobin and many other clerical Pope Francis papologists has been a unique phenomenon related to the Francis papacy.

These harsh critics of orthodox Catholics have thrived under the pope that Henry Sire calls “The Dictator Pope,” Phil Lawler calls the Lost Shepherd and George Neumayr calls “The Political Pope.”
I watched the video. To paraphrase Kellyanne Conway, that’s just Father Larry being Father Larry.

Could you unpack what you mean by this? Is it basically that this hyper-aggressive style is just Larry being Larry and therefore no big deal?

What I mean by that is that we should bear his shortcomings patiently, and listen to the truth that he is speaking. Okay, I get that he has anger issues and is, at times, less than tactful. I know people like that and still respect them and appreciate their good side.

I had never heard back of Father Larry Richards before this. I’m learning all kinds of new people lately. We don’t have cable and there isn’t a Catholic radio station in our area as far as I know. I’m beginning to believe I’m not missing much.

I watched a few other videos on YouTube hoping for a better opinion than what I got from the clip in the article. I will most certainly pray for him. If this is his normal, he definitely will be responsable for some people moving further from the Church for sure. I don’t know anyone in real life that would respond well to his style. I was amazed so many applauded him because that isn’t what would happen with Catholics I know if he melted down like that in front of us. Most of us would walk out.

I’ll definitely be praying for him by name. I won’t be watching anything else of his though. It truly made me want to leave the Church and never look back.

My reaction is the same as yours. I remain baffled that some conclude this aggression & bullying is acceptable or not really a problem. There is great rage & damage evident here.

…and Father Richards has issued a public apology, yet no mention of that. Just crickets.

I like Fr Richard’s. He says what he has to say clearly and openly. I turn the radio on to listen to him.

Then again, I have been surrounded by namby-pamby euphemistic speakers for most of my life. I would rather hear : this will send someone to Hell! than, oh, well, we’re all on a journey so we can’t say anything…

As FYI - if you can get on the internet, you can watch EWTN. They stream their video feed for free on their website and via their apps.

Stuff like that is why I won’t even click on LifeSiteNews articles anymore. I don’t know why any faithful Catholic would. They write inflammatory anti-Pope rhetoric and then make ad money off them - the same ad money whether you are reading in outrage or in sympathy. I won’t support them, even with my meager page views.

No, I’m not leaving but I honestly believe it has the potential to “seal the deal” for someone on the edge. I also believe it will prevent many from converting. A few months back I was very close to leaving the Church for several reasons and I am glad things are better now. I really think I would have left if I saw that during that time.

Thanks. I’ll keep that in mind. We are moving soon and might have more options in our new area anyway.
