You don’t become schismatic by defying your bishop. If he tries anything, you can always move to another diocese and get reinstated or write Rome directly. The only thing that matters TO A LAYPERSON is that he is in communion with the Pope.

In fact, maybe more of the laity should communicate with the Pope. I had an email address of JPII, need to find one for BXVI.

Bingo!

And the way a layperson is in communion with the Pope is by being in communion with the bishop of the diocese he/she lives in.

There is no being in communion with the Pope while not being in communion with the Church. The Church is the diocese one resides in.

Sounds like the proper chain of command but what if he disobeys the Pope?

I live in the Joliet diocese where there are no Tridentine Masses in communion with the bishop. What’s to stop me from attending one in the Rockford or Chicago archdiocese? What’s to stop me from going to a Byzantine Rite liturgy? Don’t I disobey the local bishop by doing so? And that makes me, what, schismatic? If so, maybe I can save gas money by going to a real schismatic one.

Does any of this make sense?

Who is the proper authority to determine such a thing? It is not the laity.

If the Pope does not censure a bishop then the bishop is in good standing.

First, there are a lot of issues on why a TLM might not be offered, I am not going to get into that.

You are free to go where you wish to attend the Mass, or any other Catholic rite but you are still bound by the jurisdiction of your local bishop and Latin Canon Law.

Where one might run into issues is when they start to denounce the valid Mass of the Church and her rightful bishops because of a preference that is not being met.

No one has a right to the TLM.

I heard about Fr. McLucas from a friend who subscribes to the magazine. That’s too bad. I think he is doing a noble thing stepping down for the good of the magazine.

What does a priest do if his faculties are suspended? I ask in all sincerity. If he cannot publically exercise his duties as a priest, what is open to him?
