But his task is ever so much more difficult than that of Irenaeus, Origen, and the many other early Christian thinkers. There is, for instance, the surpassingly awkward fact that not a single person, place, or event that is unique to the Book of Mormon has ever been proven to exist. Outside the *fanum *of true believers, these tales cannot help but appear to be the product of fantasy and fabrication. There is, moreover, a corrosive tradition of make-believe in the LDS, such as the claim that Joseph Smith translated the Book of Abraham — a book he said was written by Abraham — from Egyptian papyri that were later proven to be nothing but conventional funerary inscriptions.

Just read the article. It was good, well written, but somehow a bit misleading. At the end he says the LDS church is open to dialogue. He does not tell us that LDS are open to abortion in ccase of incest, rape, etc. He does not say that if the LDS does not pay the tithe, he/she wil not get help when they are in need. Seems a lot left out. I have LDS friends, hubby ex-LDS, so am quite familiar with the every-day LDS family. No happier than any other, and more divorces than those of other religions in my “friend” or acquaintance circle. One friend (LDS)loves beer so he drinks “near beer”. Two of their sons smoke cig., and both have dabbled in drugs. Guess we are all human after all. Can’t imagine “God once was as we are now”.

M understanding is that the Greek scripture interpreters of JW’s was one man who started a Degree in the subject but after only one year, packed it in as it was too difficult.

Now all of a sudden he is a scripture specialist

I see that Fr. Neuhaus’s article is about seven years old. He was excessively complimentary about LDS culture. Evidently he hasn’t seen or heard about the dark side of it.

I present this analysis of the Book of Mormon from a Catholic/American Indian point of view.

The story told in the Book of Mormon certainly has truth in it, but not what the LDS church teaches. My newest version explores the issue even more thoroughly.
