Father's day gift ideas...I'm drawing a blank

Yeah, all of them should be availible at Borders or Barnes and Nobles.

I was an English major for my BA, so reading was all I did in college…and because I have no life, reading is all I do now!

PS-I am looking my copy of the book “The Politically Incorrect guide to American History” right now. It is by THomas E Woods, jr Ph D. 19.95 in the history section at borders or the like.
 
My children (all on their own) prefer that I make a list of what I would like in a number of price categories. On my list this year are:
  • a nice set of adjustable dumbells (these can be pricey (non adjustable are much cheaper)
  • a new dressy umbrella
  • a Ravens/Orioles shirt or jersey
  • CD box sets: Etta James or the Complete Count Basie Decca Recordings or the Collection of Stevie Ray Vaugn or Creedence Clearwater Revival
  • An LED aluminum flashlight (the poster who said dads can never have enough flashlights is quite correct)
  • a set of camera filters for my new digital camera
  • a chimney charcoal starter (about 15-20 $)
Last year I got a Rabbit wine bottle opener. Very cool and very efficient.
Leatherman Tools are always welcome and one cannot have too many. Three sizes for your consideration: The Wave (full size and expensive), The Juice S2 (the most practical everyday multitool and the Squirt S2 (very inexpensive and key chain sized) Every dad (and mom) would like the Squirt S2–high quality and very very practical. If you are going for the multitool, don’t waste $ on anything but a Leatherman.
 
I don’t really know what he likes, but I’ll tell you what means most to be…being remembered.

I’m usually pretty insistent that very little money be spent for any gift for me. It’s my place to spend the money on others. It’s their place simply to remember. If, say, a grandchild brings me a cookie wrapped up in crayon-colored notebook paper, I appreciate it more than I would some expensive item. A LOT more.

My favorite gift combination (and many would think it stupid) is a one-layer box of chocolates because I like sweets, and a Louis L’Amour novel, and sufficient peace and quiet to eat the chocolates while reading the novel. I’m not a regular reader of Louis L’Amour, and I never buy chocolates. But once a year I like to read him and eat chocolates. It takes very little time to read one of his books and they have a lot of genuine history and geographical reference points in them. The plot lines are simple. The virtuous always win, and it doesn’t take very long to read one of them.

My other, once-every-few-years favorite (pricier, but not too bad) is a pair of oil-tanned, plain cowboy boots. They’re oil-tanned because if you’re a real cowboy, they don’t break up if exposed to acidic cow manure. But even if you don’t go around cattle, they’re great because, being oil treated, they “relax” and fit your feet exactly with a little wear. If you’re in a hurry to go out and do something, you just slip those right on and you’re ready to go. No lacing, no nothing, and almost nothing can harm them. I sometimes treat them with neetsfoot oil additionally, to accelerate the “forming to my feet” process, which they do readily. Nothing feels better on a man’s feet than those boots. If a guy likes to walk in the woods, those boots are pure gold because they are waterproof and a snake can’t bite through them.

To each his own, though.

Your post is very endearing. Aw…my dh is similiar…tells us not to make a big fuss over him. He has always liked me to fix him a really nice breakfast – to him, that is his favorite part of father’s day, watching me set out a really big big breakfast. ( we are small breakfast eaters typically, so it feels like a holiday) :o*

Okay, okay, seriously, get him something that help him get closer to Jesus, like a spiritual book or a basketful of sacramentals.

Well, my kids don’t want to get the telescope. :banghead: Here we are again. Back to square one. I am definitely going to get the history book that Rascalking suggested, and the NHL stuff…I’d like to get him something unusual though–that is unique for him.

Guess it’s going to be a long day at the mall this Saturday. :o*

My dh would rather get something he wants, than have us guess and buy something he doesn’t like or want.

*Yes, my kids asked him (I mentioned it earlier in this thread)and he said…‘underwear and socks.’ Come on, we’re not getting him that. I think he says this, which is code for …don’t spend a lot of money on me. I have known him for a long time, he talks in codes. 😛

I think he would like the NHL stuff…he has said that. He also loves to cook, and I have bought him in the past, high quality chef type items for the kitchen. But, dd and ds said they don’t want to get him that. Could get him Pirates tickets, for when they come to town…🤷*

Maybe you should buy the underwear and socks and use them as “wrappers” instead of paper?.. Then just put a bow on top? 😛 Might be a cute idea! 😃
 
I think you should get the underwear and socks, if you all have the energy; it might be the ambiance that he would like better.

For example, the best gourmet meal you could put together, as he sits down give him a good 3-minute neck and shoulder massage, with your dd fanning him, your ds could man the bbq or mow the lawn to take over the fatherly duties. You could cut his food and hand feed him. Corny, you’ll think, yeah, but this stuff works, and it gets a great laugh!

We do something similar to this for a few of the fathers that help us out. Plus, of course, some holy fathers, they LOVE it!! We clean, we cook, we serve, and then we clean up everything. They look forward to this once a year.

My scenario was very cliché, but you know dh best, what service type stuff would he like?

Other scenarios and things you can buy:
• Have a family fishing trip Day.
• Buy him a tackle box with all the bells and whistles, a new rod.
• Buy new golf shoes.
• Buy new titanium golf balls. (Some of these brands are too expensive for practical men to buy, so they make great gifts).
• Spend the day at the Country Club with him.
• Make a place in the home that is dad’s corner, his office or tool haven.
• Buy him a great researched cordless power drill; maybe it is time for a new one.
• Find room in the garage for a tall tool chest filled with his favorites, or the new rolling toolbox.
• Catch a ball game.
• Do a sport stadium tour.
• Make a scrapbook tie with family pictures. Take an old tie that is ratty or one he won’t wear, then hot glue or staple photos on for a far out project. The tie would be awkward and stiff, but he only has to wear it enough to get the picture with it on. You might be surprised how he will wear it to work.

I think some dads resort to the underwear and socks because they really don’t need or want anything. Some men won’t remember what they got if you ask them in five years, but they will remember a memorable dinner especially for father’s Day where he gets to do nothing and is coddled the whole time.

He will really be making it up next mother’s Day.
