A response to Maureen Dowd’s NYTimes Opt Ed., Father Doesn’t Know Best
Ms Dowd,
I read your article today with the same disdain that I felt toward another of your acerbic editorials. You write well (thanks to that Catholic college you attended), but display a caustic vitriol, and a predilection for pollster morality. The Church is not in the business of taking polls on moral issues. Unlike many other denominations, it is not a democratic institution. It does not depend on some fashionable whim dictated by a sensual prejudice of its nominal, lukewarm members such as you.
The holy doctrine of Jesus Christ is clear in the Church’s catechism. You need to study it. She has the duty and responsibility to teach and uphold it, despite her flock’s objections. The Judas priests who failed and fell into betrayal, you continue to use as lame excuse for your own moral disobedience and confusion. Did you not know the Church is composed of sinners like them–like you and me? Take great care that you are not one of ‘the blind leading the blind into the pit.’ The Fathers do know best.
