“Fathers shall not be put to death because of their children, nor shall children be put to death because of their fathers. Each one shall be put to death for his own sin." Deuteronomy 24:16

Why did God take the life of David’s son after David committed adultery (with Bathsheba) and killed her husband? Why did David’s son have to pay the price of death? It seems as if the death of David’s son does not line up with Deuteronomy 24:16. Can anyone please help me with this dilemma?

Deuteronomy 24:16 is a law made by God for man; He’s not bound by his own laws.

2 Sam 12:13-14 says, “And David said to Nathan: I have sinned against the Lord. And Nathan said to David: The Lord also hath taken away thy sin: thou shalt not die.
Nevertheless, because thou hast given occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, for this thing, the child that is born to thee, shall surely die.”

David confessed but was punished for his sin. I know your problem is with the child dying who didn’t do anything wrong. In God’s wisdom, He took the child and we must leave it at that. It’s hard to understand but God’s punishment of David was merciful. If he hadn’t confessed he probably would have been killed by a punishment from God. Having the child die, David would suffer from this the rest of his life but it could have been an occasion of grace for him.

D-R Bible, Haydock Commentary:

Ver. 16. Sin. Judges have no right to punish any but those who have transgressed. (Calmet) — God may for reasons known to himself, which cannot be unjust, visit the sins of the fathers upon their children; (Exodus xx. 5) and hence, (Josue vii.) he ordered the family of Achan to be involved in his punishment. Temporal sufferings, or death itself, are not however always a misfortune. They frequently prove a source of inconceivable blessings, Romans v. 3. (Haydock) — The Rabbins understand, that fathers and children are not to be received as witnesses against each other, (Onkelos) which seems foreign to the sense of the present law. (Calmet)
