Dear Brothers and Sisters,

A friend of mine called today and wants me to read a book on Fatima that she is reading. I will read it, of course, but I decided to review some of the official documents I have already read and especially the Theological Commentary by then Cardianl Ratzinger. (Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI). Below I’ve given a link to these documents at the Vatican, but I would like to quote the conclusion from the Theological Commentary:
…And so we come to the final question: What is the meaning of the “secret” of Fatima as a whole (in its three parts)? What does it say to us? First of all we must affirm with Cardinal Sodano: “… the events to which the third part of the ‘secret’ of Fatima refers now seem part of the past”. Insofar as individual events are described, they belong to the past. Those who expected exciting apocalyptic revelations about the end of the world or the future course of history are bound to be disappointed. Fatima does not satisfy our curiosity in this way, just as Christian faith in general cannot be reduced to an object of mere curiosity. What remains was already evident when we began our reflections on the text of the “secret”: the exhortation to prayer as the path of “salvation for souls” and, likewise, the summons to penance and conversion.

I would like finally to mention another key expression of the “secret” which has become justly famous: “my Immaculate Heart will triumph”. What does this mean? The Heart open to God, purified by contemplation of God, is stronger than guns and weapons of every kind. The fiat of Mary, the word of her heart, has changed the history of the world, because it brought the Saviour into the world—because, thanks to her Yes, God could become man in our world and remains so for all time. The Evil One has power in this world, as we see and experience continually; he has power because our freedom continually lets itself be led away from God. But since God himself took a human heart and has thus steered human freedom towards what is good, the freedom to choose evil no longer has the last word. From that time forth, the word that prevails is this: “In the world you will have tribulation, but take heart; I have overcome the world” (Jn 16:33). The message of Fatima invites us to trust in this promise. (Underlining is mine)

I’m glad to review these documents because as I watch the news, and the aggression of Russia in the Ukraine it is obvious to me that the Church has not continued to pray as Mary asked, nor are we willing to make the sacrifices we need to make in avoiding sin and remaining in God’s Love as Jesus has commanded us to do.

Pope St. John Paul II asked specifically if the Consecration he made of the world fulfilled the requirements and Sister Lucia said it had. Nevertheless, it seems to me that we, as a Church, as God’s children and Mary’s children have not been faithful to Jesus’ command to watch and pray lest we enter temptation. Too many of us have been careless and confused and sinful and have not repented as we should or lived God’s Truth lovingly… God have mercy on us and send His Holy Spirit to kindle in us again, the fire of His Love.

I think that the problem is the third secret was released too late. It was meant to be released no later than 1960. The Church’s delay in that might mean that there will be destruction and Russia won’t convert.

You must separate what politics is to what the Church in Russia is doing. The fact that the Church is free in Russia is what counts. The fact that the countries of Russia and the Ukraine are involved in some aggression does not nullify what Fatima had helped the Christians there to be to where they are today. Aggression is just a matter of certain principals that always needs to be addressed be it in Russia, Ukraine or anywhere else. The fact is Fatima has removed the terrible persecution of the Christians. We need to solve all forms of aggression and since the Church is now much freer perhaps than it was before, the Church there must handle it in time. We in the U.S.A, and Canada have our own aggression to deal with as well as abortion is the ultimate killing machine the world has ever experienced. Aggression in the former Soviet Union countries or here in Canada and the U.S.A is just a matter for the Christians to step in to stop it through their witnessing. We need to address our own problems as well.

O Mother of all men and women, and of all peoples, you who know all their sufferings and their hopes, you who have a mother’s awareness of all the struggles between good and evil, between light and darkness, which afflict the modern world, accept the cry which we, moved by the Holy Spirit, address directly to your Heart. Embrace with the love of the Mother and Handmaid of the Lord, this human world of ours, which we entrust and consecrate to you, for we are full of concern for the earthly and eternal destiny of individuals and peoples.

In a special way we entrust and consecrate to you those individuals and nations which particularly need to be thus entrusted and consecrated.

We have recourse to your protection, holy Mother of God!’ Despise not our petitions in our necessities.:

Behold, as we stand before you, Mother of Christ, before your Immaculate Heart, we desire, together with the whole Church, to unite ourselves with the consecration which, for love of us, your Son made of himself to the Father:˜For their sake’, he said, ˜I consecrate myself that they also may be consecrated in the truth’ (Jn 17:19). We wish to unite ourselves with our Redeemer in this his consecration for the world and for the human race, which, in his divine Heart, has the power to obtain pardon and to secure reparation.

The power of this consecrationlasts for all time and embraces all individuals, peoples and nations. It overcomes every evil that the spirit of darkness is able to awaken, and has in fact awakened in our times, in the heart of man and in his history.

How deeply we feel the need for the consecration of humanity and the world”our modern world”in union with Christ himself! For the redeeming work of Christ must be shared in by the world through the Church.

The present Year of the Redemption shows this: the special Jubilee of the whole Church.

Above all creatures, may you be blessed, you, the Handmaid of the Lord, who in the fullest way obeyed the divine call!

Hail to you, who are wholly united to the redeeming consecration of your Son!

Mother of the Church! Enlighten the People of God along the paths of faith, hope, and love! Enlighten especially the peoples whose consecration and entrustment by us you are awaiting. Help us to live in the truth of the consecration of Christ for the entire human family of the modern world.

In entrusting to you, O Mother, the world, all individuals and peoples, we also entrust to you this very consecration of the world, placing it in your motherly Heart.

Immaculate Heart! Help us to conquer the menace of evil, which so easily takes root in the hearts of the people of today, and whose immeasurable effects already weigh down upon our modern world and seem to block the paths towards the future!

From famine and war, deliver us.

From nuclear war, from incalculable self-destruction, from every kind of war, deliver us.

From sins against the life of man from its very beginning, deliver us.

From hatred and from the demeaning of the dignity of the children of God, deliver us.

From every kind of injustice in the life of society, both national and international, deliver us.

From readiness to trample on the commandments of God, deliver us.

From attempts to stifle in human hearts the very truth of God, deliver us.

From the loss of awareness of good and evil, deliver us.

From sins against the Holy Spirit, deliver us, deliver us.

Accept, O Mother of Christ, this cry laden with the sufferings of all individual human beings, laden with the sufferings of whole societies.

Help us with the power of the Holy Spirit to conquer all sin: individual sin and the˜sin of the world’, sin in all its manifestations.

Let there be revealed, once more, in the history of the world the infinite saving power of the Redemption: the power of merciful Love! May it put a stop to evil! May it transform consciences! May your Immaculate Heart reveal for all the light of Hope!

Dear randomusername,

Thanks for your reply. Actually, if you read the documents from the link I gave, you’ll discover that Lucy was the one who decided to add to the outside of the envelope containing the third secret that it was not to be read before 1960. When asked why she chose that date, she replied that she did not think it would be understood before then.

Our Lady’s primary message is always an echo of what God has revealed. Her words basically repeat what Jesus said at the beginning of His earthly ministry, “…the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the Gospel.” (Mark 1:15)

All through Salvation History, we see God’s Mercy calling His children but since He has given us free will, we must choose in love to say as Mary did, “Yes”!

The Catholic Church has said Fatima was fulfilled. Sister Lucia had confirmed that the consecration was done successfully and according to the Blessed Mother’s directive. There is a chronological timeline on EWTN (just google Fatima timeline ewtn). It shows the entire process, including the failed attempt, and you can see immediately how the hand of God moved against the communist persecution of Christians upon the fulfillment of Our Lady of Fatima’s command.

Dear chimo,

Thanks for your reply. My post was not intended to be about about politics but rather the connection between Russia and the ongoing prophecy contained in the Fatima Message. It seems to me that all of us need to examine our consciences on whether we are listening to God’s Word, and if we are living His Truth lovingly wherever we are. Mary’s words at Fatima are in perfect conformity to God’s Word. She is always, like her Son, “Yes” to God.

I’m not sure what you mean by saying “Fatima has removed the terrible persecution of the Christians”. I believe we will as Jesus told us “have tribulation in the world”. We are His followers and suffering comes as no surprise. Yes, we must do all we can to overcome evil by doing good but only in heaven will we be free from suffering and enjoy eternal bliss.

I agree with you that Christian witness is crucially important. If we do not live the Truth of God’s love in this world, than we cannot call ourselves disciples.

I would love to see priests restore the Leonine prayers – the prayers that used to be said after Mass for the conversion of Russia. Since they are AFTER Mass, I don’t think there would be any worry about mixing the Extraordinary and Ordinary Forms.

Thanks, Hazmat, I love this Entrustment Prayer of St. John Paul II. What a loving son he was on this earth to Mary, and through her to God Father, Son and Holy Spirit!

St. John Paul II, pray for us.
Our Mother and Model pray for us.

Truer words have not been said about him. Thank you for stating them again. I have always felt that the early deaths of his brother, mother, and father were to cement his deeper relationship with Mary as his mother.

Dear St. Francis,

Thanks for your reply. The Consecration was done, yes. However, the ongoing prophecy that I am considering is that of the Immaculate Heart’s ultimate triumph, referred to in the theological Commentary by then Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI); he wrote, as part of his conclusion:
…I would like finally to mention another key expression of the “secret” which has become justly famous: “my Immaculate Heart will triumph”. What does this mean? The Heart open to God, purified by contemplation of God, is stronger than guns and weapons of every kind. The fiat of Mary, the word of her heart, has changed the history of the world, because it brought the Saviour into the world—because, thanks to her Yes, God could become man in our world and remains so for all time…
For me, this is the ongoing prophecy, for we have not yet seen that ultimate triumph of God’s Love as reflected in the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I believe we are yet to see that final fulfillment of God’s reign over hearts. There is so much violence in our world because so many have stayed from God’s Truth. The more we learn listen to God’s Word as Mary did, and by His grace, we do the Truth we hear, the closer we will come to conversion ourselves as well as the conversion of so many others.

"You have seen Hell where the souls of poor sinners go. To save them, God wishes to establish in the world devotion to My Immaculate Heart.”

“I will take Jacinta and Francisco shortly; but you will stay here for some time to come. Jesus wants to use you to make Me known and loved. He wishes to establish the devotion to My Immaculate Heart throughout the world. I promise salvation to whoever embraces it; these souls will be dear to God, like flowers put by Me to adorn his throne.”

When did this part of Fatima stop being taught to our children?

We hear the talk about the consecration of Russia but how many individual souls consecrated to The Immaculate Heart of Mary will She find the seventh time? “And I shall return here yet a seventh time.”

Thanks, Auntie A,

God is always working good in our lives and the early deaths of St. John Paul II’s brother, mother, and father were certainly part of God’s plan in molding the heart of His faithful son. I think God also used the words of St. Louis de Montfort, for St. John Paul II wrote that as a young man, his reading of De Montfort’s treatise on “True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary” was a turning point in his life. His papal motto “Totus Tuus” (All Yours) is taken from that book.

Fatima, of course, was a significant part of St. John Paul’s life. What a joy to know that he is in heaven praying for us, and the whole human family, with our Mother Mary for the Glory of God and the salvation of souls! Let us also pray fervently: “O my Jesus, pardon us and save us from the fires of hell. Draw all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of Your Mercy.”

Dear Ed,

Thanks for your reply. It depends on the location, it seems to me, as to how much is taught about Fatima and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I’m grateful we have First Saturday devotions continuing in our parish and we have been also working with our parish school of Religion and the Catholic School in our parish to help our children grow in devotion to Mary as well.

There is also a significant effort to increase the number of Catholics who personally consecrate themselves. Perhaps you have seen the website HERE

One of the most beautiful efforts I have read about recently is that of Archbishop Sample of Portland encouraging First Saturday devotions in all his parishes and consecrating his Diocese to Mary. His letter to his priests encouraging them to join him in this effort of Consecration led me to forward his letter to my Bishop and ask if such a Consecration might be possible in our diocese. My Bishop responded that he read the Archbishop’s letter and would reflect on it. I continue to pray he will not only reflect but act on it.

If you feel the children in your parish are lacking in devotion, would you consider making an appointment with your pastor or school principal. I’ve done both and we have made some progress, although we have a long way to go. There was very poor catechsis after Vatican II but I think we are turning a corner, and hopefully renewal will continue if we pray and persevere in doing whatever the Lord calls us to do.

May God help us, by His Grace to grow into true sons and daughters of His and of Mary. 🙂

Dear Reclaim,

Have you spoken to your pastor about this. He may be open to it. If not to all the Leonine prayers (three Hail Mary’s, Hail Holy Queen and the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel), perhaps he would be open to the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel at least. In our Parish we have the Angelus before Mass and the Prayer to St. Michael after Mass with invocations to Mary, St. Peter and the Saint of the Day.

Thanks for your reply and for your own devotion to Our Lord through Our Mother Mary, and for sharing their concern for the conversion of all souls. Let us also continue to pray for our Pope, Bishops and priests who are charged with shepherding the People of God.

How we need to grow spiritually – all of us, everywhere – by God’s Grace and the intercession of Mary!

I think that the problem is the third secret was released too late. It was meant to be released no later than 1960. The Church’s delay in that might mean that there will be destruction and Russia won’t convert.
I agree, especially since it was suppose to come out in such a hard time during world history, and that supposedly the Popes saw the message and said no its not time, it does give you that “oh man” feeling.

There was very poor catechesis after Vatican II
In 1958 I made my First Holy communion, was given a rosary and enrolled in the brown scapular (the outward sign of consecration to Our Lady).

I know I’m not doing enough but really who does that anymore and shouldn’t we all consider why not?

Dear Ed,

Thanks for your excellent response! I too was enrolled in the brown scapular and received a Rosary at my First Holy Communion. In some parishes, (like my present parish) that is still the practice for our children. I do not know how well our children are taught but as a Member of the Legion of Mary I have been in touch with our pastor, our School Principal and the Deacon in charge of our PSR (Parish School of Religion, formerly CCD) to work on fostering greater devotion to Jesus through Mary. I’ve also spoken at PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) meetings and to Catechists.

Why not continue to pass on our Catholic Faith? or perhaps stated, “Why do so many Catholics at present have little desire to live our faith as seriously as we ought?” There seems to me to be a real “lukewarmness” in our parishes toward Mass, sacraments and devotion to Mary – and it is growing. It will continue to grow unless , by God’s Grace, members of the Church begin to build up one another in Love (cf. Ephesians 4). I mentioned the “ongoing prophecy” of Fatima, because I believe we all need conversion before Mary’s Immaculate Heart will triumph. We need to listen to God’s Truth proclaimed and to live the Truth we hear.

The Holy Spirit has been given to the Church that we may come into the complete Truth of Jesus. Just as Jesus came the first time into this world by the power of the Holy Spirit, through Mary, I believe He continues to come. Pope Emeritus (Benedict XVI) said so well in his Theological Commentary:
… I would like finally to mention another key expression of the “secret” which has become justly famous: “my Immaculate Heart will triumph”. What does this mean? The Heart open to God, purified by contemplation of God, is stronger than guns and weapons of every kind. Millions had died in Russia. Over 1000 Bishops most of them Orthodox were killed. Only 4 Orthodox Bishops remained in Russia prior to the Second World War. God knew that the suffering Church in Russia would be in danger of being exterminated. The Orthodox Church which was the main Church in Russia was in danger of being eliminated. God decided to help the suffering Christians by the sending of His mother. The sending of His mother would be towards the Catholic Church not to the Orthodox Church. Why? God needed the prayers and sacrifices of the Catholic people to turn the tide of the Communist agenda that was occurring in Russia. This was the first time in the history of the Church that a predominantly Catholic congregation would pray for a predominantly Orthodox congregation. This has never happened before. Fatima is more this coming together of the Orthodox East to the Catholic West. The Orthodox in Russia would never had gained back the Church without the great sacrifices, prayers and penance which their Catholic brothers and sisters had given in response to the requests of their common Mother. Fatima is the turning point in history because it had involved both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. It is as if God had chosen this time to spell it out more. And what is that? The unity of His one Church, the Orthodox East to the Catholic West. We are only in the beginning times of understanding how great this unity will forge the Church into a tremendous revival. We are not there yet because God needed the Orthodox Church in Russia to survive this “assination attempt” the Communists were trying to accomplish in Russia. The survival of Pope John Paul II’s assination attempt was a prequel to the undermining of the Communist threat that had plagued Russia and for the rest of the world. With the Russian Orthodox Church back we can find in time this unity between our two Churches. This is will only come with more contacts and mutual understanding from our peoples.

Dear chimo,

Thanks for this reply and for explaining your comment. I too pray with Jesus and Mary that we may all be one, as Jesus prayed in John 17. Did you ever read the story of this icon:
(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)
The story of this icon entitled “The icon of the Mother of God of Fatima: Mystery of the Light that is God.” is a beautiful one about a Catholic priest and a Russian Iconographer who was Orthodox. I tried to find it again but was not able to find it this morning. If I can find it I’ll post the story in a new thread. Thanks again, and please let us continue to pray and trust in God’s great Love, through Mary. I believe her Immaculate Heart will triumph because she is totally His.
