I heard somewhere that Mary told the children in Fatima that one reason souls are damned is because they have no one to pray for them. Is this true? To whom may this be the case?

That cannot be true.

I’d have to go back to the documents on Fatima (and I’m sure someone around here actually will!!!), but the best you could say is that “someone who is bound for heaven, but who is still in the process of purgation, is still in the process (but might otherwise would not) because we’re not praying for them.”

It’s not a dogmatic statement. We don’t claim that the prayers of the faithful for the souls in purgatory knock a certain amount of “time” from a process that, in all actuality, is “timeless”, so to speak.

The claim, then, is merely that we on earth can assist the souls in purgatory by our prayers… and we need to do so!

you need to pray for those here on earth and make sacrifices for them. Don’t you know people who reject the gospel who could benefit from your prayers and sacrifices, potentially leading them to the faith. I think that’s what it means.

So my understanding then is that she meant many never experience the joys of God here on earth because they have no one to pray for them while they’re still alive. If that’s correct then that clears things up. I was certain I was missing something. Thank you.

No. That statement says something subtly different: many never experience the joys of God in heaven, because while they’re still alive, no one prays for their conversion / justification / sanctification!

Mary asked us to pray and do penance for the live and the dead.
This is correct.
But when a person dies, they will immediately either be saved or go to Hell.
So if the goal is to save sinners/ keep them out of Hell, we need to pray for them while they are alive.
This wasn’t a new concept (St John Vianney and many others taught it before Fatima). Just a reminder.

The prayers for the deceased help the souls who are saved, but in Purgatory. They don’t keep anyone from going to Hell.
