Hey Martian - I can’t tell if your motive is good or not, so for a moment, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt. You use the term “blindly following” quite a few times, as if to say Catholic believers are merely sheep. I’m sure you know better than that. I’ll repeat what others have said:
- no one is required to believe these sorts of things
- The Church says that Christ’s message has been given in full, by his words and his life. We do not need to *wish for *apparitions and signs. I have met quite a few of what may be (uncharitably) called, “apparition chasers” , and it seems they are missing that point.
That said, an apparition or message that is approved by the church can add a great deal to a believer’s life.
- It seems like you may not know how rigorously the church investigates things like this, and most never get past the early stages. Suffice it to say, if an apparition has been approved by the church, or even if the church just declares, “it does not go against the faith” you can bet it has been looked at every way from A to Z for errors.
- And since you keep wanting to know how “us guys” on this site feel and believe about these things, all I can say is at this stage in my journey, I just don’t know. I don’t believe I need to be an expert on Fatima to follow my faith as a Catholic. I can tell you I DID visit a church-approved apparition site which is now a shrine. (Knock,in the west of Ireland) and found it to be a very special place, a holy place and, despite having needs and problems, I did not ask for any favors, healings, or anything for that matter. Not simply because I was unsure about the place or its history, because it seemed like too special a place to do something as crass as ask for a favor! Probably a missed opportunity, now that I think of it!

As for wondering about Satan showing up as an Angel of light, and/or deceiving us all with tricks - sure, that is something to be vigilant about all the time. Some stories from saints include that very thing…and some places people were wild about 10-20 years ago may be turning out to be just that - deceptions from the dark side, the father of lies, etc.
However, in the case of Fatima, there’s been about 90 years for the church (or other naysayers) to “debunk” it, but that ain’t happening.
So, bottom line, I can be Catholic without accepting Fatima (or others), but I’m keeping an open mind.
