I’m of course referring to the autobiography of Saint Therese of Lisieux.
Bishop Barron admitted that he didn’t “get it” the first time he read it. Just seemed like a childish story written by a cute girl. But the second time he started to see how profound the book really is. Here’s one of my favourite quotes:
"Since that period, God gave me to understand that there are souls for whom His mercy never tires of waiting, to whom He gives His light only by degrees. So I kept careful watch not to hurry His timetable, and I waited patiently for it to be pleasing Jesus to make it come.
So all of us are on different schedules with the Lord. No need for us to compare ourselves to others or become concerned at why others don’t follow the same path as us, at the same pace and time. It’s His Timetable, not ours.

I have yet to read it, I suppose I might even approach St. Therese of Lisieux as too “cutesy” even, a bit like Bishop Barron. But it’s quotes like these that make me desire to give it a shot 🙂

So for the time being, I googled some quotes and this one really spoke to me:

“Each time that my enemy would provoke me to combat, I behave as a gallant soldier. I know that a duel is an act of cowardice, and so, without once looking him in the face, I turn my back on the foe, then I hasten to my Saviour, and vow that I am ready to shed my blood in witness of my belief in Heaven.”

When I was younger, for a long time, I had no desire to read it. The paperback copy that I had was titled “The Autobiography of St. Therese of Lisieux,” and I thought, why would a saint write an autobiography? It sounds sort of self prideful. What I did not realize at the time was that Therese wrote her story under orders of and in obedience to, her mothers superior, one of whom was her actual sister.

The book was rather astonishing to me. Her goodness was palpable from an early age, she seems to have been particularly graced by God. An early private apparition sort of experience made me think that sometimes such experiences really are intended only for one recipient. When she reluctantly disclosed it, it caused nothing but trouble.

"I must seek out during recreation periods, during free time, the company of the Sisters who are least pleasant to me, and fulfill among those blessed souls, the role of Good Samaritan."

I have very many. Many. Many!

Too tired tonight. Maybe tomorrow.

Two books I have are quotations from one of my best heavenly friends.

Just finished that one. Story of a Soul will be the next when I read !
