Would anyone mind posting their favorite Advent activities and traditions?

We place an advent wreath in the middle of the dinner table. On Sunday evenings we read a passage from the infancy narrative and light the next candle. Don’t forget that the pink one is 3rd, representative of hope as I understand.

I think these kinds of traditions are critical because they become sentimental memories for the kids, and for mom and dad! Plus it doesn’t hurt to get a jump on the readings in a different environment, maybe even sparking up some discussion.

I have my Advent Wreath which is on my Dining Room table. I light it daily during my Divine Office prayers & Advent readings. I also have an electric one in my porch window which I light daily. I also have my Advent Calendar as well as my Jesse Tree. I also keep an Advent journal.

Priests would call that one candle ‘rose’. If it’s pink, that means they wear pink vestments! Rose is apparently more acceptable.

I learned this the humble way when a priest corrected me.

Yes, both the candle & vestments are Rose for the 3rd Sunday. The 3rd Sunday in Advent is known as Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete means rejoice in Latin. The color Rose is for rejoicing as Advent is almost over & the celebration of Jesus’s birth is approaching.

Advent wreath on dining table - light it every night at family dinner. We sing “the advent song” (Light the advent candle one, now the waiting has begun…) as we do so. Each candle is lit by a different child (following week one, of course!) who is selected by either hubby or myself for this honor. A different child(ren) is/are selected to blow them out after dinner.

Growing up in our home, it is a very big deal to finally be old enough to light (with help) - or blow out - a candle. If no one (or not enough someones) deserve the honor on a particular day (hey, they’re kids, they make mistakes), then hubby and I take that role.

It is amazing how much less bickering occurs during the time of Advent
