My favorite books and authors are:

Pierced by a Sword by Bud Macfarlane Jr.
All of the books by Charles Dickens
The Oddysey and the Iliad by Homer
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brönte
The Giver by Lois Lowry

There are many other books and authors I love, but these are on the top of my list. I am more into classical books rather than the new age ones. 😃

These books seems interesting 😃 I like Charles Dickens and Homer 🙂

Lord of the Rings by Tolkien, and of course, The Hobbit.

I’m also fond of Sir Walter Scott, Ivanhoe and so on.
Captain Blood by Sabatini is currently at the top of my kindle menu.

But Tolkien especially scratches a particular itch for me. The many layers of spirituality are mind boggling.

Oh, and I’ve recently become interested in G.K. Chesterton, but cannot claim to have read much of his voluminous works. I did make it through The Man Who Was Thursday but here I’m afraid my profound ignorance limited my understanding of this popular work.

And J.K. Rowling is a genius.

Wise Blood by Flannery O’Connor
Silence by Shusaku Endo
East of Eden by John Steinbeck
The Stranger by Albert Camus
No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy
The Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald
1984 by George Orwell
A Good Man Is Hard To Find by Flannery O’Connor

All time favorite:
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Mr. Darcy is like Prince Charming for grown-up girls!

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte is also very good. I love the fact that she stays with her faith and her morality even when sorely tempted to bow to Mr. Rochester’s wishes.

And for something with a Catholic slant…
Mirusia by Monika Barbara Potocki. My mother and a lady from church like it too.😉

In the non-fiction category, I love Absolutely American - following West Point Cadets through four years.

Michael O’Brien’s books are tremendous, too, with Father Elijah being just a super story.

Chesterton: the Master.

I’m a grown-up guy and I love Jane Austen. I balance it out by reading Patrick O’Brien novels. 😉

I’ve always thought it would be a fun crossover if Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin met the Bennet or Dashwood sisters.

Favorite authors in fiction

HG Wells-“The Time Machine”

JD Salinger-“The Catcher in the Rye”

George Orwell-“1984”

Ray Bradbury- “Fahrenheit 451” and “The Martian Chronicles”

Ernest Hemingway “The Old Man in the Sea” and “A Farewell to Arms”

F. Scott Fitzgerald “The Great Gatsby”

Arthur Miller “Death of a Salesman”

William Shakespeare “King Lear”

CatholicAlbo: it strikes me as particularly odd that Dan Brown’s book is listed among your favorites, since that his works hit me as being anti-Catholic. Am I missing something?

Favorite authors and works
A.E. Van Vogt, especially his Isher novels and 50 Suns and Null-A stories
Charles Williams - his seven novels and some of his theology books
J.R.R. Tolkien - all his published fantasy and some of the notebooks
C.S. Lewis - Space Trilogy, Narnia, and The Great Divorce, and his other writings
G.K. Chesterton - The Father Brown mysteries
Rex Stout - Nero Wolfe mysteries
Walter Gibson - The Shadow novels
Robert Heinlein - his children’s stories
Larry Niven - Known Space stories
F. Paul Wilson - the Adversary stories and Repairman Jack stories
Terry Pratchett - Disk World, especially the Watch stories (and when is Carrot going to get together with Angua?)
A. Lee Martinez - Most of his fantasies.

I’m sure I’m missing a lot, but that’s off the top of my head, so it definitely fits my favorites.

“Sorry, but Nero Wolf never leaves his home, especially for work.”

Okay, I’ll admit it. I have a guilty pleasure.

Robert Aspirin’s Myth series.
Myth Fortunes
Another FIne Myth

I certainly haven’t read them all, and none of the Phule titles. He’s just fun.

I do not own a copy of it, but I read it in high school. In senior year we were required to take government and something else. Many people failed or did not do well with these classes. They were offered together during summer school before senior year, so I took them then. This book was on a list we had to choose from to read and report on.

I do not remember much about all the characters and plot, &c, but I remember pointing out how, during our own dark ages monks copied and saved texts, and that much of what we know about the ancient world, not just religious texts, is the direct result of this meticulous copying. The teacher acted like this was news to him. I got an A.

Why do you hate it?

I have certain books that I read over and over, on schedule, once a year, which means that I have read some of these 40 or more times. (I’m 56.)

Laura Ingalls Wilder–all of the “Little House” books, but especially The Long Winter

Bram Stoker–Dracula

Louisa May Alcott–March family trilogy (Little Women, Little Men, Jo’s Boys)

in addition, I read Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Holmes Canon regularly, although not annually. I especially like the short novels.

The modern author that I like is Anne Rivers Siddons, although the last novel she wrote was really disappointing.

I love H. P. Lovecraft and Stephen King. I must confess that most of the rest of my favorite books are children’s books, even though I’m an adult.😊
