Favorite Bible Passage

You have to admit, however, that there are some passages (such as the rather long geneologies with the unpronouncable names) could be rather of a bore. Some parts of Numbers, if I were the writer of that book, I would find some way of shortening, such as where each of the tribes brings forth the same offering for the tabernacle as the other tribes. I get about a quarter of the way through that chapter and I’m like “who cares?” (See Numbers chapter 7, not exactly my favorite Bible passage!:rolleyes:) I’d really like someone to explain why we have to know what each tribe brought as an offering anyhow? Not meaning to disrespect the Holy Spirit for including that in the Bible, I would just like more understanding why.

Yes there are some passages that are beyond boring. Skimming is a good thing. 😃

But certain passages may help, or inspire, or just make you feel good. That in no way IMHO subordinates the Bible itself. There are certain verses that touch me. And I like them.

There are certain passages of Scripture that touch people in different ways. Some people may even be touched by Numbers Chapter 7. Can’t really see how but I’m not them!
 
John 1:1-5 is mine so awesome it reflects who Christ is and that satan can not control him

1 In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God.

2 He was with God in the beginning.

3 Through him all things came into being, not one thing came into being except through him.

4 What has come into being in him was life, life that was the light of men;

5 and light shines in darkness, and darkness could not overpower it.

I, Sir will speak of you this way! “Well done good and faithful servant”. Not only are you His slave, and rightly so as he purchased you at the most expensive price (crucifixion and death) but HE CALLS YOU FRIEND. You Sir bring Jesus comfort, and he accepts your love for him. You are so precious to God - who knows you through and through - and approves of you.

All manner of angels and saints and Heavenly Host speak well of you and intercede for you in their prayers and worship.

We, You and I, are member of the one and same body of Jesus Christ. I love you and honor you though we are yet to meet. For we are the beloved of God.

Comfort, honor and grace to you Sir, may they be yours eternally. And God himself resides in your heart - so FEAR NOT.

But this is one of my favorite passages!
Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah. Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes. Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain’s sister was Naamah.

Genesis 4:19-22.

How can you not love a guy who names one sone Jabal and the other one Jubal? Imagine the campfire chats they had!

Tubal-Cain has to be my favorite name in the old testament, next to Melchizadek and Jedediah.

Mate it is wonderful. What a delightful thought that those tears were for you and I. And conversely - that all the tears we weep for each other are ultimately FOR JESUS. What an eternal truth.

Billings was tremendously popular in America during our revolution from Old Blighty.

Billings also wrote my favorite Easter hymn, “On that dark and doleful night.” It describes the last supper and the eucharist. “What wondrous words of grace He spake.” Keeps me believing, music like that does.

Indeed. That’s why if I have to pick a favourite passage it would have to be Matthew/Luke 4:4:

“But he answered and said, It is written [in Deut. 8:3], Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”

What do we have that preserves the words that came out of the mouth of God? It is that collection of writings we call the Holy Bible – all of it, as contained in both the Old and New Testaments. The words miraculously recorded for us in those books are what we are going to live by according to Jesus.

They were preserved specifically as the complete and express will of God to man – to those whom He called. Referring to the Old Testament canon:

“Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come” (1 Cor. 10:9-11).

And, to the NT:

“This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour” (2 Pet. 3:1-2).

Peter places his writings, and those of the other apostles with him, in the same category as the Old Testament scriptures – as inspired of God, through the same Divine Source – in order to record the very word of God for preservation.

Each person takes from the Bible something that they can relate to in life or something special they can live by.

By no means do they forget the rest of the Bible or subordinate it. They simply hone in on one passage from it and apply that to their life. There have been some very wonderful responses to this thread and I thank you all. Please keep them coming.

and show him my salvation.”** One passage of Scripture I like is Judges Chapters 17 to 19 about Micah who hires a young Levite to be his personal priest for 10 shekels and a shirt. It shows that not everyone in the bible is “squeaky clean” There are very human characters some even corrupt. Why God chooses to have this passage in Sacred Scripture is as mysterious as God himself is!

Proverb 8:22 in old Greek 8 words "My Heart has emmitted My most excellent Word"its 23 word in English and dosent say, the Father has sent his Son to take us back to the Father…the Early Church loved this verse because of its simplicity…😉

My favorite verse used to be the one in my sig line, and while I still love it, my current favorite is Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
 
“And they that wait upon the Lord will renew their strength; they will mount up wings and soar with eagles; they will run and not be weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31.
 
My favorite is Matthew 5:13-16

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.*
14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
15 Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.
16 Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.
