Favorite Bible translation

What’s everyone’s favorite Catholic Bible? Mine is the Douay-Rheims Bible 😃

Followed by the NASB, OSB, KJV, NKJV, and ESV (and the Knox for a dynamic rendering, and the Confraternity New Testament). The ESV only has two problems: no “begotten” in John 3:16 and no definite article in 1 Tim 3:15 (and some quibbles).

What a testament to the state of modern Catholic biblical translation, that the “Evangelical Standard Version” is superior to anything we have, on the whole, except for the DRC, and the classical Reformers’ Bible, the KJV, is far superior. One could more easily argue Catholic doctrine out of the Reformation Study Bible than the NAB/RE and NJB.

The NJB, RSV-CE, and NABRE are at the bottom of my list, below even the NIV and HCSB. The RSV-2CE is better than the RSV-CE, but still unusable in the Psalms, and with many sub-par renderings throughout. I use the RSV-CE only in the Navarre Bible, when it is easily corrected by the commentary, and the Latin.
 
My favourite is the New International Version

I am also joking, too. My favourite is the Douay-Rheims and the Knox, along with the RSV-CE Anglicised.

Same. 😃

Mine has the Latin side by side with the English. It’s great fun. I don’t easy read, I study. If I want to easy read, I read a book which doesn’t have eternal consequences.

I did a rather exhaustive comparative self-study on a large swath of Bible translations focusing on certain sections which I knew were important to specific doctrine, as well as other random comparisons with readings in context. The conclusion I came to was KJV is pretty much the only thing I’ll pick up if the DR isn’t available. I have no NASB, RSV-CE, etc and I’d refuse one if offered. I have refused, actually. They’re worthless.

Last week in RCIA we did some round-robin reading with everyone using the translation du jour (tomorrow’s menu promises newer and exciting ways to further deracinate God’s Word from its own inherent Truth!). It was completely painful. I ended up just jumping on the iPhone and following along with the DR to actually know what was being read.

I didn’t even consider that, only English translations. My favorite translation is the Septuagint, then, followed by the Clementine Vulgate. I also like the Arabic Jesuit Bible too, since it was the first Bible I had any exposure to (but it’s not one of the best translations).

I can read and half-write Koine Greek, and read Attic, but I can’t speak them (nor can I understand modern Greek, spoken or written). I can read and write Latin, and speak a good bit of it with a heavy and poor accent.

What issues do you have with the NASB (besides “morning star” in Isaiah?), or the NKJV? I’ve generally found them to be the most excellent modern English translations.
