Favorite book of the Old Testament?

I haven’t read them all but maybe someday. But I’m a pretty big fan of Job.

I like his example of remaining faithful to God despite what afflictions came his way.
 
I like Job too. He loses everything yet remains loyal to God. That same absolute loss could happen to any of us too, at any time really, nomatter how comfortable our lives are at this particular moment. A sobering thought.

I also like the Psalms.
 
The psalms are good. I really like the miserere… I forgot which number it was. But I remember it from the liturgy of the hours when I was in the seminary.

I’m trying to read through the “narrative” books of the bible like in the whole “Our Father’s Plan” EWTN series so that’s kind of neat…

But there sure are a lot of neat stories in the OT.
 
I have several one is Job whom is my favorite prophet, because he reminds me of me. I am just like Job in many ways, and I always on the prayer end of bring about good from bad situations , Amongest our parish. I pray hard for them all. Like Job did, also his wisdom was totally beautiful, and teaches us alot about ourselfs, how to be and stay obedient to God.

And I like the book of Daniel to, alot of different stories , to help us to live and always defend who we are as christians. To me Daniel is a prophet of knowledge plus a prayer warror also. which is what i am all day long. Thank you Jesus.

Ecclesiastes:

“Meaningless! Meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”

I don’t think there’s another book in the OT that makes the world seem so dull, and God magnificent by contrast. If you love the world more than you ought to, read Ecclesiastes - the world becomes very trite, indeed.
 
The Book of Daniel hands down. What i like about it is how God saves him and is with him always and even threatened by death in the most horrendous manners he stays faithful to God and every time God sees him through it shows you that God stands by his followers in all things.

Whenever I start feeling sorry for myself because of various trials, Job immediately comes to my mind and then I laugh at my silliness and call myself Jobette. 😃

Another favorite is the Psalms. There is at least one for every emotion I am feeling, it seems.
 
At this point Genesis is my favorite book. It is filled with amazing typological word pictures of Christ and of the New Testament salvation process.
 
Its a toss up between Daniel and Jonah. Daniel because I love apocalyptic writings, and Jonah because of the great miracle that took place and how it changed the whole city of Nineveh, who were Gentiles! Not something you see much of in the OT.
 
I use the Psalms every day for prayer, but if I was to choose a book that I just enjoy to sit back and read it would be Isaiah, especially Chap. 53 (The Suffering Servant).
 
Ecclesiastes. If you’re depressed and sick of the world Qoheleth is right there with you.

Ruth.If you’re depressed and sick of the world have a small helping of love, devotion, and intelligent women.

Psalms. It gives great insight into David and why God called him a “man after my own heart.” We see the details of his life in Samuel and Kings, but we see HOW he worships in the Psalms. It’s really very moving to me.
 
I’m working through the OT at the moment, much of it for the first time, and I’m spoilt for choice. My favourite, I think, is probably Ecclesiastes (and I’m fond of wisdom literature generally).

I’ll admit I’m finding the pentateuch and the historical books harder going, but there are some great stories, especially in Genesis. There are all sorts of scenes which I know but have never taken the time to sit down and read properly, like Babel or the Flood, or Jacob wrestling with the angel.
 
I have to say Genesis is my favorite- love the mythology of the beginning, the Faith of Abraham and the very real behavior and motives of the people therein- Then almost any one of the prophets. It is interesting to note that Qoheleth not one of my favorites had a difficult time getting into the Hebrew canon because of it’s darkness.So did Song of Songs( naughty bits) Esther(because in MT God is never mentioned)
 
Well I love Daniel, Jonah, Esther… Job & Ecclesiates have too many boring parts,
and Genesis, well it’s the only book we couldn’t do without.
My favorite? – Proverbs… Why? It gives you the most bang
for your buck. You can think on 2 little lines for the rest of the day…:rolleyes:
 
I love Sirach. It is full of great advice that is just as applicable today as it was when it was written.
 
I love the Psalms and Proverbs b/c of the prayers and the proverbs b/c it just makes sense…

The Book of Job

***It demonistrates the power of God over Satan

The potential of man’s goodness

The need for Faith Hope and Love

The Mercy of God and God’s faith in His creation

In the times we live in with the people currently in Government Office, this story gives me hope to carry on***👍
 
I like JOAB (Job) - I like the part about the Devil in attendance of the Angelic Corporate Meeting and God asking why he’d even bothered. (first time) “Oh, I’ve been around! I’ve seen the problems on Earth.” “Oh, but have you seen My servant, Job?” “You protect him!” “You can have you way with him but you can’t touch him.” (2nd Time) I’ve been around. Have you seen Job? You protect him! You can touch him but you can’t kill him. Job is faithful throughout his life but nags about his misery. God tells him so, “Look at all that I gave you and all you can do is complain you no longer have it!”. Job apologizes, admits he been a real paintheass but God reward his 10-fold from what He originally gave him because of his faithfulness.

I like 1 SAMUEL too - God having annointed Saul as King later rejects Saul as King. Samuel says, "Why didn’t you do what the Lord told you to do? I told you the Lord said to kill them all: every man, women, child, infant, cattle, sheep, goats - annihalate them [Amalekites]. Saul had spared the king plus the best of everything else. Samuel continues, “Because you did not obey the Word of the Lord, the Lord takes the Kingdom of the Isrealites from you”.

And as proof that Samuel understood just how serious God was about killing them all, he then killed the Amalekite King, “You made many mothers childless. Today your mother will be childless”. Samuel then refuses to have anything to do with Saul after that. Saul mourns for him but never sees him again.

Personally, I think they should drop the Soap Operas and just do stories from the Old Testament: It is the original human drama!
