I was trying to do a poll, but I haven’t been able to figure it out, and for some reason it is not lettig me delete the post. Taking into consideration that Chants and Liturgical hymns such as O Salutaris/ Tantum Ergo, Pange Lingua, and Panis Angelicus are somewhere at the top of the list, which of the following is your favorite Catholic hymn of all time. Please do not add more to this list. There are other threads to post hymns you like.
  1. Holy God We Praise Thy Name
  2. O Sacrament Most Holy
  3. Soul Of My Savior
  4. Come Holy Ghost
  5. Immaculate Mary
  6. Hail Holy Queen
  7. Stabat Mater Dolorosa/ At the Cross Her Station Keeping
  8. For All The Saints
  9. O Sacred Head Surrounded
  10. Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence

Probably Holy God, We Praise Thy Name or Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence.

I think it is also worth saying that, YES, we realize that not all these were written by Catholics. Sorry I just killed your witty post!

Oh, which ones are those?

Yep, we grabbed a lot of Anglican and Lutheran hymns down the years.

For All the Saints is my favourite. Music by Ralph Vaughn Williams.

I am surprised “Ave Maria” didn’t make your list …

I was glad to see the responses on “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence”. The melody you likely know is adapted in large part from a chant of Byzantine origin (from the ancient Divine Liturgy of St. James) that is quite stunning and profound. It is sung traditionally at the Vesperal Divine Liturgy of Great and Holy Saturday, in anticipation of the Resurrection.

I’m sure you will hear and appreciate the similarities in the melodic themes vs. the version to which you are accustomed.

Pax Christi!

O sacred heart is a Lutheran hymn and the English translations of most of the others - and their tunes were penned by Anglicans.
O Sacred Heart is not on my list. O Sacred Head Surrounded *by Crown of piercing thorns *is attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux

I thought about putting “Ave Maria” on my list too, but as the Latin for the Hail Mary prayer, it should be as a given with the others at the top that I didn’t list. If you start listing all the Liturgical chants and prayers etc. there is no room for hymns. And that is more of what I was going for.

How about Allegri’s “Miserere mei, Deus”
It is possible that I could have missed something that should be on the top ten list of Catholic All Time favorites. However, there is another thread where you can post all of your numerous favorites. Please choose your favorite of the 10 listed (if that is possible)

Fascinating!

He wrote the original poem, but the original hymn was written by Paul Gerhardt, a Lutheran, in the 17th century. It was then translated into English in the 19th century in two versions - the O Sacred Head composer was Sir Henry Baker, who helped put together the Anglican hymn book Hymns Ancient in Modern.
