He wrote the original poem, but the original hymn was written by Paul Gerhardt, a Lutheran, in the 17th century. It was then translated into English in the 19th century in two versions - the O Sacred Head composer was Sir Henry Baker, who helped put together the Anglican hymn book Hymns Ancient in Modern.
Thanks for this information. I had known that some of our hymns that have been added such “Amazing Grace”, “Eternal Fortress is Our God”, “Precious Lord Take My Hand” and some others were originally written by non-Catholics, but I had no idea of some of my more favorite traditional “Catholic” hymns were not written by Catholics.

How about Panis Angelicus,
One Breath
Taste and See
Let Justice Roll Like a River
Pange Lingua
The Advent Song if any little kids in the congregation at Advent
Majesty - not Catholic I know,

Sorry, I forgot to add my preferences earlier when I posted.

Of the hymns you have selected My favourite is Sweet Sacrament Divine, closely followed by Soul of my Saviour. I also quite like For All the Saints and O Sacred.

I am ambivalent about most of the others, but I really don’t like Immaculate Mary - neither the words nor the melody. There are, IMHO, much better Marian hymns but that is for another post.

Hope this helps.

What on earth was I thinking? I meant to say “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” but I also had in mind the Navy Hymn, “Eternal Father Strong to Save” were on the list of hymns written by non-Catholics

is a fantastic hymn, although I wouldn’t want to hear it at mass.

I was thinking of the Kendzia version. It is a wonderful way to express Holy Saturday “New Fire”.
