Bells of St. Mary’s has always been one of my favorites along with *Going My Way…*Guess I really like Bing Crosby? These movies are very nostalgic and tell of a kinder warmer time in the Church and the world…

Favorite Catholic Movies-

If you had the guts for The Passion of the Christ then…

The Butcher Boy. An Irish movie about life as seen thru the eyes of a small boy. Sinead OConnor as the Virgin Mary. Rough stuff -but ultimately redeeming-in my mind at least.

The Bad Lieutenant. Harvey Keitel as a very dirty cop. Director’s cut is very rough stuff. Another redemption movie. His encounter with Christ still moves me ten years after seeing it.

Black Robe. Missionaries in 17th century Quebec. Beautiful cinematography. Intersting clash of cultures that resonates to events occuring now.

Somebody mentioned the Audrey Hepburn movie. I like old movies and surprised myself by not having seen it until a few months ago. The end shocked me a little bit. Very engrossing flick.

The Exorcist. Cannot watch alone. Bypassed my own empty house a few weeks ago after working late at night and listening to a similarly themed radio show in the car. Ended up sleeping at ma’s house. Spooky, REAL stuff.

Millionaire. The new indy release about a boy that finds a stash of money and talks to the saints (a la Butcher Boy). Saw it with my kids-we all loved it!

A thought provoking movie that I have not seen in years about a modern cloistered nun that gets pregnant and aborts-maybe Jane Fonda is in it as well as a famous english actress. Can’t remember the name-but it was interesting.

Bells of Saint Marys is best, with Man for all seasons coming in close second! YAY! HEhehe… they are just wonderful. I love the singing and the nuns in the first! We like to watch it at Grandma’s house all the time!

I would have to say one of my favorite catholic movies of all time would have to be “the Mission” it portrayed the SJ in a good light and plus kept it true to what most likely happened in Central America. Any body else have a different favorite movie?

The Mission is one of my all time favorite movies. It has a beautiful and symbolic portrayal of repentence, penance, and forgiveness. The scene with the slave trader carrying the weight of his sin through the jungles and up the mountains only to be released from it by those he sinned against is incredible.

Dearest All

Mine is ‘Jesus of Nazareth’ which was a sequel shown on TV years ago, I must have been 12 years old at the time. But I have never been able to find this on video or dvd, but I know it has been released as a movie.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Teresa xx
Jesus of Nazareth is available on DVD. It’s over 6 hours long and I prefer it to the Passion. It’s an absolutely stunning movie. I love it so much.

I’ll never forget when I first saw this movie on TV. I was in highschool. I do have a 2 volume video set, but it is missing some scenes that were on TV. I think they must have had to cut a lot of stuff out when they put it out in video. Initially I think it was much longer than 6 hours.

A short but quite moving scene that struct me to the heart was when the character Zerah (spelling ?) walked into the temple just after Jesus died and that HUGE curtain tore in two! Do you remember that? Is it on your DVD copy? It isn’t on my video copies.

I didn’t see The Maldonado Miracle mentioned here. I had never heard of it, but picked it one day while looking for a family movie to rent. It turned out to be a great choice. It is Salma Hayek’s directorial debut, and has Peter Fonda, of all people, as a well-intentioned, but disheartened priest. It is a wonderful story of faith being renewed in a small, poor town. The characters are richly human with issues that we all can identify with. It is a feel good movie for sure, and I highly recommend it.
Happy viewing,
Sherilo

I just got back from a movie that played at the local art flick. It was called “Millions,” and had St. Clare in it, St. Nicholas, St. Peter, and I won’t ruin it for anyone who hasn’t seen it and might go. I liked what I could hear of it.

I saw Babette’s Feast, but I’m not clear on how it is a Catholic movie. Oh well.

I just picked up the DVD of “Ever After” starring drew Barrymore. It could be described by some as a feminist version of Cinderella as Danielle (played by Barrymore) rescues the prince and stands up to him.

However, it’s probably one of the most unintentionally Catholic friendly movies I’ve seen. In it Danielle’s father buys Thomas More’s Utopia and it is referred to and quoted from several times in the movie. The Prince brings Danielle to a monastary where there are hundreds of books (to impress her); the monks are only heard chanting and not a perv in sight.

When Danielle quotes from Utopia she does so to stand up for the rights of the poor and downtrodden.

One the the funny lines is when arranged marraiges are discussed. The King and Queen of France decide the prince should choose his own bride. The queen makes the comment that only the British get divorced. BTW this takes place in the 1500s.

Plus, the romance is chaste and everything. And the girl who is smart and kind gets the guy not the girl who flaunts her body and steps over others to get what she wants.

It’s not perfect tho, the prince and Danielle miss Mass.

Has anybody else seen it?

No, the scene you describe is not in my copy. Now I am dissapointed!! 🙂

I love how the Virgin and St. Joseph are portrayed in this film. What a great movie. Peter is also given lots of attention and is played very well. A beautiful film!

My favorite was not listed in the poll:( …It is an oldie but goodie: Song of Bernadette:) .

Karen Anne

How about the movie “Alive”? A bunch of airplane crash survivors debate whether or not to participate in cannibalism which is against their Catholic religion.

I saw another movie with depicted Bishop Romero of Central America being killed while celebrating the liturgy. I do not remember the name of the movie. I thought it was very good though.

I will go with “The Passion of Christ”. I will have to see more of the movies listed.

I have not read all the postings, and I’m guessing this has been posted already, but I have to mention Therese. I saw this movie and was moved to tears. I also think its a great movie for kids b/c it shows St. Therese as a real hero and a person who stood up for her faith, was not afraid to be different, and kept her faith even when she was so often ridiculed. Also, the viewer gets to see the gradual change of heart of some other characters that came from St. Therese’s gentle, loving, and subtle charitable actions.

I also have to mention Return to Me. It is a funny love story with a pretty goofy, out there type plot, but there is some great family stuff in it. Bonnie Hunt wrote it, is in it, and directed it. (I love her) Her character’s family is a big loving Catholic family with some (name removed by moderator)ure, but sometimes realistic quirks. The movie also has Carol O’Connor and a cast of his pals who are hilarious to watch. O’Connor plays Grace’s (Minnie Driver’s) grandfather. One of Grace’s life dreams is to visit Rome and so love of Rome comes up in the movie. Grandpa (O’Connor) is shown praying to Jesus, Mary and Joseph, is always encouraging Gracie to stop at church and pray, and tells her (one of my favorite lines ever–something my own Irish grandfather may have said) “Pray for me in Rome, God’ll hear ya betterr.”

Thanks for this post. I really look forward to seeing more of the films listed here!

Although a love The Passion of the Christ, My favorite Catholic movie - or movie in genenral, is A Man For All Seasons. I know this sounds strange - but I watch it every Christmas. It helps remind me of the significance of the holiday.

My favorite movies are:
Jesus of Nazareth
The passion of the Christ
El martir del Calvario
The song of Bernadette
Don Bosco
Fray escoba
La virgen de Guadalupe
These are just a few I can recall on,but there are many others I love.:clapping:

A Man for All Seasons, Beckett (my name is Thomas, maybe I’m prejudiced), Jesus of Nazareth and one I’ve seen on TCM a couple times w/ Frank Sinatra & Spencer Tracy, The Devil a 4 O’Clock.
