I like that image! Well, except the fact that I’m a vegetarian & hate cigar smoke :). But I think I get his meaning, that the Catholic Church satisfies the soul…
 
Actually by Galadriel describing Elf-magic, but it describes the Sacraments incredibly well. “For this is what your folk would call magic, I believe: though I do not understand clearly what they mean; and they seem to use the same word of the deceits of the Enemy.”

The reference is to temptation by what appears to be “angels out of heaven”…but actually the fallen angels…It is famously quoted by Hemingway in the Three Day blow and by many others.
