Being hopelessly addicted, I have to ask . . . . do you play any U2? or is it a strict christian label format? (If you hate em please be kind 😃

And second have you heard of “The Violet Burning” they are out of California very good 🙂 but another “underground” band. They sell their own stuff like Larry Norman does. The Violets are in Switzerland area this month. And Larry was poping in somewhere there too I think, just a few as his health allows. Anyway I babble, just wondering if you had heard of them.

Or Larry now I think of it. 🤷 🙂

I do play “non-religious” stuff as well, and yes, U2 do fall into that category now and then 🙂

The Violet Burning are fantastic - bought their “Drop-dead” album from their website at the end of last year and i think it’s fantastic 🙂

Must say i haven’t heard of Larry Norman though 🙂 But thanks for the introduction - i’ll check him out 🙂

I haven’t heard anyone claim that they exclusively listen to Catholic music. In fact, I’ve said that I listen to Relient K, a Christian band.

However, some of us would like to support more Catholic authors, because many Christian songs imply heretical ideas. And yes, I said heretical.

I won’t listen to any song that implies OSAS or other erroneous beliefs.

I am not a big fan of music - any kind - but I had to point out that there are plenty of “under ground” bands out there. One example is my own Priest and two of his buddies got together to make an album. They have now created two albums that they make themselves and you can purchase at their website xaltar.com. You can check them out and even buy their CD’s from there.

Just had to put in a shameless plug for the group :rolleyes:.

They are very Catholic in the theology of their songs and one of them, “Pray a Prayer” won a local Music award!

You can go here xaltar.com/news.html to get links to some Catholic music websites and read about what has been happening to the group.

Anyway, I am all for promoting good music and if you are going to listen to Christian rock or pop or whatever, you could try to find the Catholic groups to see if they are any good, only you can decide if you like what is out there as the enjoyment of music is very subjective :).

I think it’s a matter of watching the kind of stuff you listen to in all fairness - there are some bands which profess a type of life and worship that i don’t agree with, and as a result, like yourself, i won’t listen to them.

I agree there are many “Christian” artists out there who’s message isn’t always one which can be followed by all sects of the Christian Faith. There are a few comments further back about Catholic radio stations and lack of Catholic artists etc - how do you differentiate “Catholic” music from “Christian” music? Singing about the Papacy? Confession? Liturgical content? Eucharistic ceremonies? Doesn’t make for very good lyrical content IMHO, however i will give kudos if someone here can come up with lyrics about any of the above 👍 I think having music which professes a generic love for God and Christ is enough - too detailed starts to reduce the accessibility to “non-Christians” makes it a very “cliquey” scene…i like bands who aren’t always explicit as it allows those who are not of the faith to access the music and perhaps become interested in the theory behind it, whereas more intense lyrical detail may detach their interest slightly and be seen as a negative product of the music.

Nice to see another Relient K fan by the way 🙂 - glad im not alone 😛

The first Violet song I heard was *Lost Without You Near Me *and I instantly liked them. That hadnt happened since I first heard U2 sing Two Hearts. Even the christian radio station here plays a bit of U2 and really played from the cd “In the Name of Love” (promotion for Africa) when it was christian artists covering U2 songs, sneaky DJ’s

Im sure you will enjoy Larry, if you have any questions re him I can steer you to his website, and the “digest” where they discuss all that is Larry 🙂 He has a interesting life, his lyrics have been covered by a lot of bands. He lived in SanFrancisco in Haight Ashbury didnt move there, lived there.

He was famous for speaking to secular artists about God, and just about anyone who will listen. Actually left the label because they wanted him to “tone down” lyrics and went independent. He does have a double cd “The Belfast Bootlegs” which highlights alot of his music you may enjoy that.

🙂 if you cant tell by now I like this topic. Music speaks to me more than any other forms.

Kitty, would you kindly provide a link to his website. I had never heard of him, but the posts mentioned him haved picqued my interest. What does his music sound like? (Hard rock, soft rock, folk, etc.?)

Since Larrys been around for a while I could relate him to perhaps Neil Young especially in that Larry plays solo and with several bands. His songs have been covered by other artists and perhaps sung in church (before they figured out it was him, he jokes) That would be Sweet Song of Salvation.

It can be harder or ballads or just regular rock. Hes tried to sing in some of the “newer” styles and ummm not sure if its working 🙂 Coming from the 60’s protest like songs, social condition, worship songs, songs of life. When he sings and people clap he points up, One Way (I guess his "trademark)

Thanks for the links! He sounds like a great musician. I do like Neil Young’s music, so I probably would like Larry Norman. I guess I just never heard of him because I really did not get into Christian Rock until the late 1990’s, and the CCM radio stations do not really play anything that is more than 10 years old. 😦 I will see if I can find any of his music.

I enjoy ALL kinds of music, but overall, I really think that Kutless’ “Sea of Faces” is one of the greatest songs ever, the lyrics are EXCELLENT. Another song that really hits home for me is “In The Light” by DC Talk…oh, when I first heard it, I thought, “oh my gosh, they are singing about ME!”

I, too, like the Kutless “Sea of Faces” song I was waiting to see this thread come up again. I just got a hold of Toby Mac’s new cd Portable Sounds…I am blown away!! This is the greatest cd I have heard from any Christian artist (and I have heard a lot) I have hardly stopped listening to it. Has anyone else heard this CD? I would love to hear what you think about it.

…and also for recommending Toby Mac’s new CD. I pretty much live in the middle of nowhere, we have one radio station that comes in well, and it’s TOTALLY local. Country music (which isn’t ALWAYS annoying), some radio show from the 40’s that’s on EVERY day at the noon hour, and two hours of local residents’ announcements, sale items, etc. Needless to say, I am at the mercy of anyone’s tips on good music, Christian or any other type. Don’t get me wrong, I love living in a small town these days, but some things are certainly lacking sigh

I’m going to check out Amazon for Toby’s new CD. Thanks for bringing it up, I wasn’t aware that a new one had been released.

Probably one of the best Rock songs ever and easily the greatest Christian rock song.
