Since I will not be going to malls, and will avoid any other shopping experience I can until December 26 because I am already tired of the incessant piped in Christmas music and chintzy decorations, I will let you choose the Christmas songs for me. What is your favorite Christmas hymn, religious content, and also what is your favorite “secular” Christmas or holiday song?

Stille Nacht (auf Deutsch) and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (as sung by Judy Garland in Meet Me in St. Louis)
 
Oh my goodness - O Holy Night and Ave Maria make me cry! So they are at the top of my list, as is O Little Town of Bethlehem, the Amy Grant version.

Also, Do You Hear What I Hear? and Angles We Have Heard On High really move me. In fact, when the mood (or the hormones!) is right, basically any carol makes me weep like a baby!

For secular carols, I gotta give it up for Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree, and I agree with you, puzzle annie, on the Judy Garland version of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. Boy, what a voice on that woman!

Plus, all of The Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky - marvelous!

I’m now going to start my Comcast Rhapsody and play Christmas music!

The Cambridge Singers (directed by John Rutter) have some fantastic Christmas CDs- mostly traditional hymns/carols from various nations and the Church. “Christmas with the Cambridge Singers” is my favorite. I also have a couple of CDs by the Choir of King’s College: “Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols”, and “Noel: Christmas at King’s”. Good stuff.

Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas - I don’t know why but this song always gives me goosebumps!

Also, my all time favorite Christmas album is the Carpender’s Christmas. Holy cow, that album is sweet.

They are awesome! I like Oh Come All Ye Faithful. Partly because I like the words and partly because when I hear it I can still hear - in my head- my dad singing it in church. My dad is still alive but stopped going to Mass when I was about 8. The only time in recent years he’s been to Mass has been for my kids’ sacraments.

Oh Holy Night is my all time favorite. I get shivers when they sing “fall on your knees, oh hear the angel voices”.

I love the traditional songs. I can do without the generic songs that leave Jesus out as well as the materialist attitude that Christmas is all about $.

My preferred version of O Holy Night is by Andy Williams - is that corny or what? But, the dude can put the heart into that song.

My pick for Ave Maria is by Stevie Wonder.

I don’t know the song Mary, Did You Know?, so I’ll have to look for it this year.
 
I love almost all Christmas carols because i love Christmas. Two songs that really stand out are Silent Night and Away in a Manger. They have to be my two all time favorite carols. For secular carols, “Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas”. I am not sure if that is the correct title but. . . . . . .
