Well as a ‘Catholic returning home’ I have found all the songs in church have changed and so have had had to learn them, My favourites from when I was a teenager…just a few years ago now…😉 were, “Away in a manger”, and “The First Noel”.

Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas”

Nat King Cole’s “Ole Holy Night”

👍

This one stuck with me from the moment I first heard it. It’s sung to the tune of “Scarlet Ribbons”.

Blessings,

Gerry

God’s Surprise

Who would think that what was needed
To transform and save the earth
Might not be a plan or army,
Proud in purpose, proved in worth!
Who would think, despite derision,
That a child should lead the way!
God surprises earth with heaven,
Coming here on Christmas Day.

Shepherds watch and wise men wonder,
Monarchs scorn and angels sing;
Such a place as none would reckon
Host a holy helpless thing;
Stabled beasts and by‑passed strangers
Watch a baby laid in hay;
God surprises earth with heaven
Coming here on Christmas Day.

Centuries of skill and science
Span the past from which we move,
Yet experience questions whether
With such progress we improve.
While the human lot we ponder,
Lest our hopes and humour fray,
God surprises earth with heaven,
Coming here on Christmas Day.

I love “Lo How a Rose” especially when performed by a brass ensemble. As for secular, I don’t like most secular Christmas songs, but I suppose my favorite would be “Silver Bells” because it was on a record my parents played alot when I was a little kid.

O Holy Night
Little Drummer Boy

Both make me weep like a little schoolgirl. :o

And on the lighter side:
Have a Holly Jolly Christmas. 😃

My favorites are O Holy Night and What Child is This?. 👍
Whew, I’d scrolled down and hadn’t seen What Child is This. Glad I am not alone having this song as a favority. It’s just so hauntingly beautiful. Also agree on O Holy Night.

I might just break out that Chistmas CD and give it a spin tonight!

Angels from the Realms of Glory, especially Canadian Brass version

Ding-dong merrily on high

Lully Lullay

Pat-a-pan

Hark how the bells, sweet silver bells (don’t know the name of it)

these are all favorites from days in choir, so much fun to learn and sing in 4 part harmony

O holy night and carol of the bells (the one with bells and a choir)…those are my absolute faves!!!

  1. God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen. To me, it combines the best of the religious and secular aspects of Christmas – it’s a time of comfort and joy. Who doesn’t want that?
  2. Hark the Herald Angels Sing, the Charlie Brown Christmas special version.
  3. The Rebel Jesus, which I’ve only heard on the Chieftains’ Christmas Album. It’s a good reminder that Jesus came not only to comfort the afflicted; He came also to afflict the comfortable.
  4. (tie) any other Christmas song, religious or secular, not sung by the Chipmunks.

My favorite religous Christmas songs are Silent Night and First Noel. My favorite secular Christmas songs are Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock.
But basically I love any Christmas song. I LOVE Christmas! 🙂 🙂 🙂

“Oh Holy Night”

“Ave Maria” sung by Charolette Church (she has a Christmas CD out)

“Mary’s Boy Child” was recorded by a German disco group popular in the late 70’s called Boney M. The song was first done by Harry Belafonte back in the 50’s, but Boney M added more lyrics and a reggae beat to the original calypso song.

I have a hard time selecting from all the religious songs. I love them all.

Of the newer songs I like “Mary Did You Know”. But my favorite is “Mary’s Boy Child” sung by Boney M. with a reggae beat & the extra lyrics “Oh my Lord, you sent your son to save us. Oh my Lord, your very self you gave us…” LOVE IT!

On the way home from Mass tonight, I heard a version of “What Child is This?” that was very nice. I’m pretty sure that it was done by Vanessa Williams- she has a very smooth, pretty voice- and it had a slightly jazzy beat.

There’s a gorgeous version of “O Holy Night” out by Josh Groban. Love it!

And I’ve heard Boney M’s version of “Mary’s Boy Child” a few more times. I like it more each time I hear it.

I’d like to put in a plug for Natalie Cole’s “The First Noel”

Right now, I am kinda into “The man with the bag” and “Is that you, Santa Claus”?

“MARY DID YOU YOU KNOW?”

Mary did you know your baby boy will one day walk on water?.
Mary did you know your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know your baby boy has come to make you new?. This child that you’ve delivered will soon deliver you.

Mary did you know your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know your baby boy will calm a storm with his hands?
Did you know your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
When you’ve kissed your little baby then you’ve kissed the face of God.

Mary did you know? The blind will see. The deaf will hear. The dead will live again. The lame will leap. The dumb will speak the praises of the lamb.

Mary did you know your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know your baby boy will one day rule the nations?
Did you know your baby boy is heavens perfect lamb?
This sleeping child your holding
Is the GREAT I AM.

When I was first learning this song to sing at Christmas Eve Mass, I had the hardest time because I would start to cry.

I also love this song. Our choir sang it a couple of weeks ago. I also like O Holy Night, and Hark the herald angels sing, played on a trumpet. Very inspiring! Merry Christmas from Dave in cold Northwestern Ohio. I’ve really enjoyed the forum this year.
