You might like the Sister Fevrisse books, by Margaret Frazer.
I enjoyed them a lot. In fact I should look up the ones I haven’t read.
Also if you haven’t read Dorothy Sayers’ Peter Wimsey books, they are great.

I enjoy the books by Bess Streeter Aldrich. Not sure if their fiction but they are early American life. My favorite is " Lantern in Her Hand." God Bless, Memaw

My favorite … of all time! (From an English teacher)
“The Strange One”,by Fred Bosworth
Some parts are a little racy, but the story explores issues around ambition and race. Life choices, what’s important, and ones real identity (not what goes for identity these days). Beautiful language and imagery.
It was written for young adults back in the day when they could read…
“Cry and the Covenant”, by Morton Thompson. It’s the story of I. Semmelweis, the doctor who fought for the simple washing of hands by obstetricians when delivering babies. He suffered greatly during the time when such tactics were laughed at. He saved many lives, both mothers and children.
For a fast read, Sharon Kay Penman is a wonderful storyteller, if you are into English history, like I am. “When Christ and his Saints Slept” is fantastic. It’s part of a series, all of which are very good.id read anything of hers.
There’s also an older novel called: “The Book of Kells” By R. A. MacAvoy.
Time travel. Sacrifice, love.
And I have to admit I love the earlier novels of the Outlander series. “Dragonfly in Amber” is my favorite.

I fell in love with * Kristin Lavransdatter*, by Sigrid Undset, an historical fiction set in medieval Norway. It isn’t fluff though. Not everyone’s taste, but that’s kind of par for the course for me. It did win a literature prize.

Faye Longchamp Mysteries by Mary Anna Evans are pretty clean (except for the inevitable murder, naturally! )
But no gratuitous or even descriptive scenes of sexuality, profanity or violence (again, excepting the need for a body and self-defense situations). Occasional mild reference to Native American or paranormal beliefs held by minor characters but overall these books are less offensive than the average tv commercial, imho, and are definitely more entertaining.
Added bonus is the author does due diligence on the historic and archeological details supporting the heroine’s exploits.

Some of his early work has scenes that link sex with grisly violence; some of his later work describes in such great detail the sick acts of his villains that you feel tainted reading it.
There are also some excellent books, such as One Door Away From Heaven.
