My favorite is one that was popular when I was a kid" Oh Lord, I am not worthy that Thou shouldst come to me…"
Sadly, one rarely hears it today.
That’s also my favorite. It’s what I grew up on as a kid, and it often brought tears to my eyes, making me realize what a miracle the Eucharist really is. I have not heard it in decades, and I miss the hymns of that time.

If there is going to be music, I prefer either only instrumental or a Choir singing in Latin. But I never get it 🤷

God Bless.
Speak to your Music director…us friendly ones take requests. 👍

Also, gently mention it to the Pastor…Something like
“You know, if you wait to play it at my funeral, I won’t get to hear it myself!”
A little humor goes along way…
Especially now that we are approaching Lent…some of the less rousing hymns should be utilized. Even if it was as an instrumental, as you say…would be nice. Say, during the purification of the vessels…and private prayer?

God bless you.

Sweet Sacrament Divine
Bread of Heaven on thee we feed
Deck thyself my soul with gladness
Lord enthroned in hevenly splendour
Soul of my saviour
We pray thee heavenly father.

👍 That !

WHile i there are many songs i like ABOUT the Eucharist, i wish we could have no distraction at that time.
If we could all see what is really going on at the altar during the time of Consecration, we would all be on our faces. It is then that we are all present at Calvary at the moment of Jesus’ crucifixion, and He is looking at each one of us with complete love.

To be distracted in any way, even to be looking at a hymnal, is a waste of those precious moments when we are in the physical presence of God the Son, Our Lady, and all the host of Heaven. It is a time we should spend adoring Him during this most sublime gift of Grace for our souls.
I’m really with you on this. I love the songs about the Eucharist. They are very emotional. But the gift of the Eucharist should not be a distracting time. So, maybe we could have a quiet time BEFORE the consecration to play the songs and then go into the most important time of the Mass??? I just love the music and wish we could hear it at an appropriate time More Often! 😃

Hmmm. Here we’ve gone into a lot of effort making the Mass audible. Just so we can drown it out, especially the Offertory, with hymns?

Well, if we’re going to place music exactly where it was appropriate, then I guess we’re left only singing the Sanctus.

Or will we leave that to the angels, and just pretend to hear it? 😉

I will have to go against the grain on this one. My favorite is silence. I like to pray and reflect during this time and find the hymn distracting.
Mine, too. I’d much rather “all mortal flesh [kept] silence…”

I love hearing Song of the Body of Christ at my parish. Very seldom that I hear that song. I guess it depends on which mass I attend.
As Music Director, I seldom program that song because although the words are beautiful, the music for the refrain and the verses is both slight *and *identical, and it gets numbingly repetitive after awhile.
(My instructions are to have the same music at all five Masses.) So, for the Saturday Vigil Mass, I’m rarin’ to go. By the last Mass on Sunday afternoon, I feel like I’m halfway through “100 Bottle Of Beer On The Wall.”
God bless!

I think our parish also has the same songs at every weekend Mass, but I never understood why. There are about 4 or 5 different choirs or singing groups, each with a different style and personality. They sing at different Masses. Why not let each group pick the songs for their Mass?

Yes.
Yes,
and LOL YES!

Our First Communion children learn that by memory as part of the rehearsals for their First Communions. There are six First Communion Masses over two weekends and all the kids (and *JUST *the kids) sing it by heart before they go up to receive. Then I continue and improvise upon it on the organ while they receive. It’s a beautiful and faith-filled moment.

When I was music director I switched up based on the preferences of the attendees…it was not reasonable to expect the same kind of participation. Masses tend to have very definite “demographics”.
But at my present parish, (where I am NOT the Director) they use “worship aides = programs”. They only want to print one set. But I do find, that the abilities of the musicians at each Mass varies greatly. I wish they WOULD mix it up, so we they wouldn’t have to struggle so much. It’s very distracting when you know the musicians are just not comfortable with a piece. Certainly they should all be in line with the readings.

Our pastor takes seriously the concept that the entire congregation is One family. (Indeed, the flags in the parking lot all say “One Bread, One Body; Our Faith, Our Family.”) So, what’s sung at one Mass is sung at ALL the Masses. I DO get to mix it up a bit with different instruments and tempos, but it’s the same songs. The result is nice; we don’t have all the older folks going to one mass with traditional music, and the teens going to another with contemporary music, and the young familys going one with kid-friendly music. They all come to worship together, and the diverse Music at each Mass reflects the diversity of the faithful in the pews.

Hope this helps! God bless.

Yes, that’s “O Sacrament Most Holy.” I put a link to a version of it in post #29. It’s quite beautiful when the children sing it. But it wouldn’t hurt for the adults to sing it now and then as well.

Propers…I doubt if we’ll ever hear those. I guess hope is a virtue though!
