Can’t choose just one Easter musical text…

Hymns: Jesus Christ is Risen Today and The Strife is O’er, for their sort of joyful, grandiose character typical/appropriate to Easter. And At the Lamb’s High Feast We Sing.

Others: I love the Regina Coeli chant - not only the simple tone that many people are familiar with, but also the solemn tone - very beautiful! Also, my absolute favorite polyphonic setting of this text is Orlando di Lasso’s 6-voice setting. Here it is, if anyone is interested: youtube.com/watch?v=M0_CqF8ehKY

Finally, I love the Victimae Paschali chant (Sequence) and the Vidi Aquam chant.

So many musical treasures within the Church tradition, for which I am so grateful!

Back in the 70’s I remember an Easter hymn simply titled the “Easter Song.” Maybe some here remember it…

My Lord, He died for a Kingdom
To redeem the hearts of men
Now, My people, don’t you weep
He is risen from His sleep
He lives again! Alleluia!

Sing Alleluia! The Lord is risen!
He is risen, indeed! Alleluia!

I am especially fond of “Christ the Lord is Risen Today” with the Llanfair melody, not so much the other hymn with the same title.

Alleluia! Give Thanks

I like the interplay of the two melodies in the chorus.

Bayan, Magsiawit Na! (Filipino for: O People, Sing)

Jesus Christ is Risen Today

Ad Cenam Agni

Thine Be the Glory
Regina Coeli

and

I Saw Water Flowing

I wish I knew some more modern Easter hymns to teach the choir - they’re lacking I find. Hymn, the the choir.

Christ is Risen!

I also love Jesus Christ is Risen Today. In fact I’ve been humming it all morning. 🙂

My favorite is the Paschal Troparion of the Byzantine Divine Liturgy. It isn’t that it is such a great hymn musically speaking, but is is a much-anticipated part of the Divine Liturgy during the Paschal season. We first hear it at Matins - following a procession around the Church, the priests knocks on the doors of the church with his hand cross. Then, for the first time, the Paschal Troparian is sung by the priest:

Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered; let those who hate him flee from before his face! As smoke vanishes, so let them vanish; as wax melts before the fire, So the sinners will perish before the face of God; but let the righteous be glad. This is the day which the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it! ***Christ is risen from the dead, by death he trampled death and to those in the tombs, he granted life.***We sing this over and over throughout the Divine Liturgy and throughout the Easter season. It is always sad when the last “Christ is Risen” is sung, and much anticipated every year.

I woke up this year on Easter morning to the sound of my 8-year-old (who was sleeping to my bedroom floor) singing “Christ is risen from the dead, by death he trampled death and to those in the tombs he granted life.”

The other hymn that is sung during the Easter season is also beautiful:

The Angel exclaimed to her, full of grace: Rejoice, O pure Virgin! Again, I say rejoice! Your Son is risen from the grave on the third day and has raised the dead! Let all nations rejoice! Shine in splendor, O New Jerusalem, for the glory of the Lord is risen upon you, O Zion. Sing with joy and rejoice, and you pure Mother of God rejoice in the Resurrection of your Son! Amen.

I just LOVE the Litany of the Saints that is sung when the RCIA candidates welcomed into the church during the Easter Vigil.

The Exsultet. 👍
Went to my first Easter Vigil Mass this year. I found The Exsultet to be painfully long and monotonous. But to each his own.

I kind of like Christ Be Our Light with the Easter Vigil lyrics. But my favorite, probably due to childhood memories, is Jesus Christ Is Risen Today - sung protestant style (large congregation singing loudly, accompanied by a pipe organ).

I like “Christ, the Lord, Is Risen Today” to the Victimae Paschali melody. We sing that as the Easter Sequence on Easter Sunday. It’s wonderful.

“Jesus Christ Is Risen Today” and “The Day of Resurrection” are two favorites of mine.

Ye Sons and Daughters – no doubt. It’s so plaintive and powerful. I like to hear all of the verses, 'tho.

I like Jesus Christ Is Risen Today and The Strife Is O’er, the Battle Done.

I think it’s the Exultet. It’s the one with the phrase “This is the night.”

What is the best version of this that I can hear on YouTube or wherever (I often miss it, due to my work schedule.)

I love “Jesus Christ is Risen Today”.

What Easter hymns do you all like?
Ditto

I have a favourite trio of hymns that make me reflect on the whole process of the Passion, Crucifixion, Death AND Resurrection:

!/ There is a Green Hill Far Away.
2/ Ride on Ride on in Majesty
3/ Jesus Christ is Risen Today
