  3. Lawrence of Arabia

Michael C:
Nobody mentions “Patton”?
Nor has anyone mentioned “Pork Chop Hill” with Gregory Peck. Or the very great “12 O’clock High” with the same actor.

I would rate the TBS mini-series “Andersonville” as the best Civil War film with the most accurate “look,” but it suffers from a comic-book portrayal of Captain Wirz.

Both “Gettysburg” and “Gods and Generals” would have been vastly improved with more trips to the editing room.

“Glory” is a great story that is unfortunately trashed by deliberate historic innaccuracies made in the name of inflammatory political correctness. The whipping scene was a complete fabrication; the U.S. had outlawed flogging in the Army and Navy prior to the Civil War. Additionally, the film suggests the the soldiers of the 54th Massachucetts were mostly former slaves which was not true - most were freedmen from Northern states. White Union soldiers died alongside their black counterparts in the attack on Fort Wagner but we see only dead black soldiers on the beach the next day. And effeminate Matthew Broderick as Robert Gould Shaw was one of the greatest casting mistakes in film history. Shaw was not the fop Broderick makes of him.

Can a movie really be historical?

For me, the movie series I like best goes along with the historical fiction books I like best.

The Sharpe series of novels and movies.

Historical fiction from the Napoleonic Wars.

Saving Private Ryan

Lawrence of Arabia

Patton

Band of Brothers

Tora, Tora , Tora

Full Metal Jacket

lots of other problems with Glory, including the fact the letters quoted (out of context) were written to Shaw’s wife, not his mother, however because it is one of the few treatments of the 54th and black union soldiers in general, it is a good flic. The mis-use of black soldier as depicted in the raid on the southern town is unfortunately accurate, but if the movie was going for PC it would not have depicted those soldiers as it did. The overall tone of what Shaw’s intention and vision for the 54th was accurately communicated, and its contrast with Union military leadership (including reneging on the promise to pay black soldiers the same as whites). The difficulty with obtaining adequate equipment for the men is accurate, tho I don’t know about the raid on the quartermaster. Most of what I know about the 54th I got long before the movie and book, from re-enacters of that regiment. I also had a problem with Ferris Bueller as civil war commander-who would you have cast?

another movie I forgot to mention is Judgement at Nuremburg. Also a more recent movie on the Assisi Underground with Ben Cross, don’t know if it was made for TV or not, saw it on DSS.

I have to mention a few that have already been mentioned…

A Man For All Seasons

The Passion of the Christ

Jesus of Nazareth

We Where Soldiers

Saving Private Ryan

Schindler’s List

Spongebob Squarepants: The Battle for Bikini Bottom.
This wasn’t historically accurate. They took too many artistic liberties making the film. I saw a documentary about it.

We Were Soldiers
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
