And please, this thread is for people who like and enjoy horror movies. If you want to talk about how evil or sinful it is to like horror movies, then please start another thread for it.
This thread is for those who want to talk about their favorite horror movies without being judged by those who don’t.

The Shining was a creepy movie. I remember watching it with a babysitter when i was a little kid (my mom was not amused when she found out), and the two little girls freaked me out to the point of nightmares.
Someone mentioned the prequel to the Exorcist. have you seen the original prequel? It’s called Dominion. I liked it better than ‘Beginning’. Granted, it never was completed. The effects are very bad in parts. But the story itself was very good.

I think there is a place for horror in legit cinema. See here. But I also think that many, many recent horror films are simple gore fests, and can indeed be very damaging to those who watch them. The gratutitous violence and sexual promiscuity that often saturate many modern horror films, can have a very serious negative impact on viewers, and people should really consider whether it is apporpriate to give money to this kind of thing, like Fr. Serpa said in the other thread I linked. Many of these films are essentially junk that pollute the mind and the soul. I think when Fr. Serpa said:
that that could very well apply to many horror films as well. I am not judging you here. I am not saying that you are guilty of any sins (because how could I possibly know what you are guilty of?) but I am saying there is a danger in some of the films that people should be aware of.

I have to wonder if the good Father objects to Goethe’s Faust over its detailed depiction of a man summoning the devil and selling his soul. According to Jesus, it is not what goes into a man that defiles him, but what comes out.

I don’t know you would have to ask him, but though I am not too familiar with the work I suspect that Faust is a morality tale about why it is so bad to summon the devil.
Exactly. Exposing yourself to a temptation, or facillitating that temptation for others, greatlly helps to draw out that sin that comes form within.
Jesus also said that if your eye causes you to sin that you should pluck it out, and if your hand causes you to sin that you should chop it off.

I like “Freaks”, “The Shining”, “Poltergeist”, “Night of the Living Dead”, and “Silence of the Lambs” also. Another favourite of mine is “The Others” with Nicole Kidman.

I think I’m probably more into a good suspense film than true horror, but my short list:
1965 version: “I Saw What You Did” (the remakes may be fine, but I prefer the original–which my parents saw before I was born)
Again, more suspense/thriller than deliberate horror: Hitchcock’s “Rope” (though the insight into the minds of the main characters is horrific enough)
“What Lies Beneath”.
(I’m also very fond of Rod Serling’s Twilight Zone. Any interest in a ‘top 5 episode list’ [Original TZ only] thread?)

Nick, I think that a lot of horror movies are morality tales. The question for me is always, “Is there a clear line between good and evil? Is evil portrayed as ‘good’ and good portrayed as ‘evil’?” Most horror movies make it quite clear, and we truly want the bad guy (or monster or ghost or evil landlord or whatever) to lose.
I think there is more danger in a lot of the TV sitcoms and romantic comedy movies because they make up a fantasy world that looks very, very real and can result in disatisfaction with everyday life. Everyone is always beautiful (except the dorky stupid husband and the ignorant yutz father-in-law), and when people fall in love, they also fall into bed. There’s a lot of yelling and insulting, which looks really funny on TV, but hurts the soul in real life. The kids are all cute, sassy miniature grown-ups with wisecracks ready at the drop of a hat, but in real life, these kids would be obnoxious little brats. And of course, no one ever has diarrhea or lawn chores or cleaning out cat litter or even changing a diaper (except dorky dad, who always manages to mess it up and has to be rescued by clever wife who arrives home from her high-paying outside of the home job just in time to rescue her baby from the bumbling daddy who means well but just doesn’t have the brains that a woman has).

I’ll say one last thing, then hopefully people will keep this thread for favorite movies and not on whether horror movies are morally right or not.
I don’t like movies like Saw and Hostel where there is really no line between who the good guys or bad guys are, those movies are morally questionable. But I see nothing morally wrong with movies like The Descent or 28 days later which are basically about survival. While I thought it was a joke, 28 weeks later had many charactors dying to save others.
As someone else said, most horror movies do have a moral to them. If you notice in horror movies, the people who are sleeping around or doing God knows what else are usually the first to get themselves killed, while the innocent ‘goody goodies’ usually wind up being the heroes. It’s all a matter of personal opinion. No horror movie I’ve ever seen, no matter how bloody it was, has ever tempted me to sin. they just teach me not to go down a dark alley by myself.

Do you mean like tv series? I can name one that used to scare me to death as a kid. Tales from the Crypt. I could never get past the credits where the crypt keeper jumps out. It was a good know though. It always had a moral to tach at the end.
Another one I used to enjoy, though it didn’t scare me, was Are You Afraid of the Dark. Did anyone else watch that show? It came on Nickelodian.

I don’t watch a lot of horror movies, but my favorites are probably Jaws and The Ring. (The latter made me into a Naomi Watts fan 
)
I also enjoyed the original Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein. (Still need to finish up that DVD set, Universal’s Frankenstein Franchise collection, which in addition to those two has three other Frankenstein movies.)

A Protestant friend of mine saw the first one and proclaimed it to be “filth”, said it should have been rated NC-17. I haven’t seen any of them and have no desire to.

I think I watched it a couple of times, but it didn’t do much for me. Re: Scary Movie, it, or I should say they, are spoofs of real scary movies. The first one spoofed Scream. They are comedies and have the same characters each time. Scary Movie 3 is my favorite as it spoofs The Ring and some others. I just watched Scary Movie 4, which spoofs Brokeback Mountain (never saw it), War of the Worlds, and some others. They are silly, but they can be quite funny at time.
I just saw I know who killed me. It had potential, but it was very confusing until the end.

Hills Have Eyes (Remake) Wrong Turn, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 74 and remakes. Rosemary’s Baby, Exorcist, Exorcism of Emily Rose, Skeleton Key, Cronos, Silent Hill, Underworld films…Its a deal killer if a girl wishes to keep dating doesnt like horror flicks or goofy comedies. Heck, even Audrey Heburn films and Fred Astaire flicks and stuff like Sound of Music must be liked for me to want to keep dating her!

I totally forgot about Skeleton Key. That movie really scared me. It really kept me on the edge of the seat and didn’t show gore. I still remember my first horror flic. I was 6 and my 12 year old sister took me to the movies. In the theater, they had people dressed up as ambulance attendents for those who had heart attacks during the film. I begged my sister not to take me, but she insisted. Well there was a scene where they opened a coffin and it showed some decomposing body. My sister turned to me, grabbed onto both my arms and screamed her head off. I was too numb (probably from the screaming madwoman facing me) to do anything. It still amuses me today that I was terrified going in and she was the one who screamed bloody murder

I have to agree with Cat, that there’s generally a very definite line in horror movies between good and evil. I think it’s that good vs evil struggle that’s made me into more of a horror fan in light of recent events like 9/11. I know that sounds weird, but most horror movies are set in a “nonreality” type world (like Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days Later, haunted house movies, etc.) or they’re set in our world but 9.9 times out of the 10 the evil can be vanquished or destoryed. The real world doesn’t work like that. Sometimes it’s nice to escape and go somewhere where good and evil collide and somehow good always comes out on top.

I actually did not like Silent Hill. I’m a huge fanatic for the games, so thats probably why. I had high hopes that the movie would be just like the games, but I felt the story strayed way too far. Wasn’t as scary as the games. It started well, and pyramid head was very frightening, but it was over all a huge disapointment for me.

Glad I found this since I grew up on the horror genre.
As a kid, one movie that really scared me was an old BW film called The Flesh Eaters. I was convinced these little creatures were in my bathtub, but still watched the movie every time it was on TV. I finally found it and bought a copy.
The original Texas Chainsaw is a favorite and my godmother actually dated Gunnar Hansen (Leatherface) for a time. I also thought John Carpenter’s The Fog was a very creepy and underrated film.
Friday the 13th pt. 1 and 2 were good, the rest are garbage.
I’m also a big fan of Hammer films. What they managed to do on low budgets was amazing.Chris Lee and Peter Cushing were the best.
I also like B-movie Horror and Sci Fi as well as ‘films so bad they’re good’. If anyone has seen The Creeping Terror, you know what I mean.
There aren’t too many modern films that I consider very good. I’m much more a fan of ‘what you don’t see’ kind of horror. Atmosphre and good editing always trump gore.
