I like Japanese horror films, many of which were remade into later Hollywood versions. These newer films are low on gore and high on creepiness. I enjoyed these (English title in parenthesis not to be confused with remakes):
Ju-on (Ju-on: The Grudge) - really the third in a series, the first two were direct to video.
Honogurai mizu no soko kara (Dark Water) - Very atmospheric and creepy!
Kansen (Infection) - Ditto!
*Yogen *(Premonition) - more eerie than horror.
Ringu (Ring) - The film that brought J-horror to the world. Funnily enough, I have only seen the American remake The Ring.
Finally a great Korean film:
Janghwa, Hongryeon (A Tale of Two Sisters)
