Hey, you want to talk “old school” here? My “faves” are anything with Christopher Lee, the now-long-deceased Peter Cushing, Vincent Price, Lon Chaney (Sr. and Jr.), Boris, and Bela.
I’ll even go for Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and the Birds.

You can keep everything after those.

I agree with you and the post before you. Those older horror movies are wonderful. What about Wait Until Dark? That scared me soooo much when I saw it the first time!!!
 
I’m sorry gang. I don;t do horror movies. I remember seeing Poltergeist II and being afraid of the dark for weeks in my apartment afterwards!

By the way, do I understand that a lot of the Poltergeist cast died mysteriously after production. I wonder if this genre sometimes taps into occult forces.

I never saw “Poltergeist II”, but the original was a classic.
 
I thought it was so sad that the little girl from poltergeist died. She was sucha pretty little girl.

Don’t forget the girl who played the older daughter in the film. She was Dominick Dunne’s daughter and she was strangled to death by her boyfriend/ex-boyfriend. There may have been another person or two from the film,who died.
 
I love Halloween, The Changeling (really was a great movie), and of course THE EXORCIST (BEST HORROR MOVIE EVER) (not really scary though lol).
I love the Hannibal Lecter movies too, but are they considered horror movies?

The very first Halloween was one of the scariest. I think the originals are usually scary, but then the sequels tend to be so-so. I can’t even remember the Changeling.
 
Reef Encounter (2004)–no monsters, no gimmicks: just two divers abandoned by their tour boat in shark infested waters near Australia. As riveting and as scary as anything I’ve seen. And, it is based on a true story!

Really? I didn’t find either one really scary. The first one had a few creepy parts, but aside from that not really.

Is this an outside-the-U.S. re-title? I know this movie as Open Water. It was released in 2004 but is set in the Caribbean. A unique film. Apparently the real-life story occurred off the Australian coast.
 
You may be right about the title. I checked the internet for my info. Open Water might be the correct title. I saw it when it came out and forgot the title.
 
Yes, I saw Open Water, and you are right. It was, sadly, based on a true story. There was a horrid sequel called Open Water 2, but it was not good at all.
 
Before adding anything new, I’ll add my votes to several already mentioned:

Freaks
Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Nosferatu
Poltergeist
Alien
Abominable Dr. Phibes (and heck, throw in Theater of Blood while we’re at it)

Now, some that haven’t been mentioned yet:

Phantom of the Opera (1925 silent film)
Something Wicked This Way Comes (movie of the Ray Bradbury novel)
Cat People (either version, tho I prefer the 1982 one with Nastassia Kinski and Malcolm McDowell, and theme song by David Bowie)

And finally, how about… Thriller! Yes, the Michael Jackson video! It’s got good credentials: directed by John Landis (Schlock, American Werewolf in London), makeup by Rick Baker (many horror movies); several transformation scenes, surprise ending, a rare werecat, and rap by Vincent Price!

(Oh, I feel for sure I’m forgetting some …)
 
Does anyone else still miss the way we used to get to watch these classics, before the days of BetaMax and VHS?

Settling down with a bowl of popcorn in front of the TV, after the Friday late night news, to 90 minutes or more of horror (or sci-fi) movies, with a local host showing up during commercial breaks, shows with titles like “Creatures From Dimension 13” (shown on channel 13, of course), “Mephisto’s Castle”, “Son of Svenghoulie”, or even “Elvira, Mistress of the Dark”? (Some of you may even recognize where I grew up, based on those titles!)

I still miss those Friday nights! Pulling a DVD off my shelf, knowing exactly what I’ll get, just isn’t as much fun!
 
Yup, I knew there was one I left off.

Ghostbusters II. More so than the original GB. I thought it was truly scarier at a subtler level, in that the ghost they were after was specifically out to kill children. It actually had a lot of undertones of abortion, though I’m sure the producers never intended that. Scary stuff.

With ads for dating services and trade schools, right? I only recognize Elvira in your list, but I’m guessing it was similar everywhere (Creature Double Feature!). I have to say, I don’t miss the “snow”.
