Favorite Horror movies

Ah, “snow”… that’s “s’no” problem… I’ve got a pretty high tolerance. My wife is still driven mad by the fact that I’ll gladly listen to a static-filled radio in the car if it’s airing something I want to hear.

I was into radio DX-ing, and after the movie was over around midnight, I’d start swinging the big TV antenna (roof antenna on tall mast with rotor) around the compass looking for new stations from far-away cities. Ah, the thrill of discovery! Predictable cable is so boring by comparison!

Before adding anything new, I’ll add my votes to several already mentioned:

Freaks
Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Nosferatu
Poltergeist
Alien
Abominable Dr. Phibes (and heck, throw in Theater of Blood while we’re at it)

Now, some that haven’t been mentioned yet:

Phantom of the Opera (1925 silent film)
Something Wicked This Way Comes (movie of the Ray Bradbury novel)
Cat People (either version, tho I prefer the 1982 one with Nastassia Kinski and Malcolm McDowell, and theme song by David Bowie)

And finally, how about… Thriller! Yes, the Michael Jackson video! It’s got good credentials: directed by John Landis (Schlock, American Werewolf in London), makeup by Rick Baker (many horror movies); several transformation scenes, surprise ending, a rare werecat, and rap by Vincent Price!

Alien still scares me and I’ve seen it a kajillion times. And I do remember Something Wicked This Way Comes…very dark and suspensful…

I have a question about the movie the Exorcist. At the end when Regan and her mom are moving, one of the priests gives her a medal (which i believe belonged to Father Karras before his death). What was the medal? I always thought it looked like a St.Benedict medal but maybe i’m wrong. Just wondering, thanks.

Hmmm…Horror movies…

I guess my favorites would be:

All 3 Jurassic Park movies (personally I like how the main characters, like Dr. Grant, are completely against trying to clone the dinosaurs and think that the people who are, are wrong for trying to do so:thumbsup: ), The Ring (1 & 2), The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Dawn of the Dead (yes the remake), Sleepy Hollow, The Visitation (don’t know if its a horror movie, but its good, based on Frank Peritti’s Christian novel about a false prophet claiming to be Jesus; Randy Travis plays one of the ministers in it), and there’s probably some more that I can’t think of right now.

I love horror movies, their my guilty pleasure. I hate movies like saw and Hostel (gory and pointless, not in the least bit scary), but love a good horror movie.
My top favorites:
28 Days Later. Very scary and very disturbing. The sequel was a joke.
The Descent. Only movie that has ever really scared me (enought to give me nightmares). Really a horrifying movie. Not for the faint of heart.
The Haunting. The original one, not the remake.
The Changeling. and old George C. Scott film, not sure if many people have even seen it. Great ghost story though.
The Exocism of Emily Rose. Didn’t really scare me, but it’s one of my favorite movies.

• Dracula 2001
• Omen (especially the first)
• Planet of the Apes - including the remake, but not the last two of the original run.
• The remake of “The Fly” - the 1958 original is more nerve-wracking in a more subtle way: to this day, I cannot watch the last five minutes of the original, having seen it once. The 1960 sequel was not bad, at all.
• “Dracula”, starring Gary Oldman
• “Sunrise” - which is nerve-wracking all the way
• another film of which I can’t remember the title, about some crooks who try to rob an ocean liner (most of whom die horribly, of course)
  The most haunting film I’ve seen in probably “To Serve Man”, which is one of the old “Twilight Zone” films. Series like “Land of the Giants” & “Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea” had their moments too: Irwin Allen was usually worth watching. Some episodes of “Enterprise” (with Scott Bakula) were very unsettling.

Unfavourites:

• The Mummy, & sequels (with Brendan Fraser et al.)
  constant remakes or repeats of
• Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde
• Jack the Ripper
• The Turn of the Screw
  The last of these is simply not frightening - audiences these days seem to require much stronger meat than 140 years ago; it would be interesting to know why.
