Favorite Latin Hymns, Albums, etc

I was wavering between making a thread about this here or on the Liturgy and Sacraments forum, but I figured it’d work better here.

So what’s everyone’s favorite Latin hymn? Do you listen to any Latin CDs/albums?

I guess just a place to share good chant CDs or songs.

For example, I’m a pretty big fan of the chant CD by the Clervaux Benedictine Monks of the Abbey of St. Maurice & St. Maur. Some people don’t like the little bit of organ, but I love how each song is done and they also have a great selection of hymns that they picked.

Also, came across a video game song that I really liked. If anyone has ever played Civilization 5: Gods and Kings. The intro song in Latin and has various prayers/hymns/psalms and beautiful music.

I attended a funeral yesterday, and the cantor sung the hauntingly beautiful “In Paradisium”. A few years ago, I attended the funeral of an elderly priest. More than 20 priests accompanied his casket and sang the same beautiful song. Its words and melody are so appropriate for the mood of a funeral (vs. the popular “celebration of life”).

I’ve lost my favorite CD, but I love a really good rendition of a Credo III. That whole “Deum de Deo, lumen de lumine, Deum verum de Deo vero” part-- when well-done, I could listen to that line alone on repeat for hours. 🙂

Now you’ve gotten me listening to someone’s YouTube playlist. I’ve remembered that I really enjoying the Missa Angelis in general (including the Kyrie), and the Litaniae Sanctorum.
 
There are some lovely settings of the O Salutaris and Tantum Ergo (Benediction hymns) but in fact there are relatively few Latin hymns - and even fewer outstanding ones. Many people wrongly refer to Latin pieces as hymns, but they are anthems rather than hymns and meant to be sung chorally. Of course there are the Office hymns but these mainly have Plainchant settings.

Ave Mundi Spes Maria, it was the Sequence for Votives Masses to the Virgin Mary on Saturday before the Council of Trent suppressed it.
 
I love listening to the Giovanni Palestrina station on Pandora. I may even buy some of the CDs–it’s beautiful. 👍

We don’t have a CD player. However there are many that I love.

Salve Regina is my favourite too. I know the simple tone and solemn tone (Benedictine version) by heart.

Little known fact there’s more than one version of the solemn tone: Roman, Benedictine and Cistercian. They all have minor differences, but the latter is the most ornate of them (though I prefer the Benedictine; it’s what I’m used to hearing and chanting). In fact I think even within those versions there are minor variants.

The other marian antiphons are nice too, especially the Alma redmptoris…
 
And who would not love Ave Maria? I wonder how many have heard it by The Priests? The have been on EWTN, especially during Christmas time. Here is the video, and I think you will enjoy the beautiful accompaniment by the harpist.

If I may share just one more, so we can keep all this good music in one wonderful thread. Andrew Johnson has an incredible voice for a young man. Although I’ve heard this hymn sung also by The Priests and Charlotte Church, both of whom are awe-inspiring, there was something hauntingly beautiful in this version.

It was done live, so you will need to bypass the rhetoric and scroll to 1:30 to hear him sing Pié Jesu.
