What are your favorite latin mass tones?
  • Mass I, Lux et Origo,* in Paschal Time*
  • Mass IV, Cunctipotens Genitor Deus
  • Mass VIII, De Angelis
  • Mass IX, Cum Jubilo, Feasts of the Blessed Virgin
  • Mass XI, Orbis Factor
  • Mass XII, Pater cuncta
  • Mass XIII, Stelliferi Conditor orbis
  • Mass XV, Dominator Deus
  • Mass XVI, Weekdays throughout the Year
  • Mass XVII, Sundays of Advent and Lent
  • Mass XVIII, Deus Genitor, Weekdays of Advent and Lent
I realize this may be difficult for those who don’t attend an EF mass. This is for those who are familiar with Latin mass tones and already have a favorite in mind.

Missa Cum Jubilo
Which I am going to hear (and sing) in about an hour and a half, at a Benedictine abbey 😃

It’s hard for me though, to declare a “favourite”. I like hearing and chanting most of them. Perhaps the one I like the least, simply because it’s overdone, both in style and in frequency of use, is De Angelis.

If anyone is not familiar with the Mass tones of Gregorian Chant, see here.

Hey, I’m one of those self-proclaimed ‘raw’ traditionalists who have actually never attended a real EF Mass their whole lives! 😃 But if I’m going to name ten:

1.) Lux et Origo (Mass I)
2.) Fons Bonitatis (Mass II)
3.) Rex Genitor (Mass VI)
4.) Rex Resplendens (Mass VII)
5.) Alme Pater (Mass X)
6.) Orbis Factor (Mass XI)
7.) Stelliferi Conditor orbis (Mass XIII)
8.) Jesu Redemptor (Mass XIV)
9.) Dominator Deus (Mass XV)
10.) Mass XVII

From the ad libitum chants:
  • Kyrie Clemens Rector (I)
  • Kyrie Altissime (IV)
  • Kyrie O Pater Excelse (IX)
  • Kyrie salve (XI)
  • Gloria More Ambrosiano (IV)
De Angelis is not bad, but I daresay it’s become too overused and rather clichéish.

Fortunately you don’t need to go to an EF Mass to hear them. Our abbey uses them daily, and it’s an OF Mass.
