Favorite Mass setting?

I haven’t been going to Mass regularly for long, but I’ve noticed that certain mass times use certain mass settings (as in, one for the 9:30 crowd, and another for the 11:00 crowd, and yet another for the 12:30 crowd). The 12:30 (which is more traditional) uses Mass of Christ the Savior, and I’m unsure which 9:30 uses (11:00 is Spanish, and I don’t feel comfortable going to a Mass where I can’t speak the language). Personally, I’d love for them to use Schubert’s Deutsche Messe, but I’m thinking that would be a sight too traditional for my parish (they have a Christus Rex instead of a crucifix above the altar).

Anyone have particular favorites?
 
7:30 am is my favorite. We have a cantor and our :thumbsup:huge pipe organ for music. Wonderful way to start my day!
 
I thought about a time when we were young and camping in the mountains. We were “far away” from any towns, but we had a priest and family friend who offered Eucharist in the outdoors. It was beautiful. Then I thought of this year’s Easter Vigil, full of community and song and new members. It too was beautiful. Then, I thought of home masses in the
'70’s with such excitement and dedication. They were beautiful too. And last Sunday …

I guess I just like attending Eucharistic celebrations.
 
At my parish we’ve been using the same Mass setting at every Mass with music since 2011. At this point I’d almost be willing to go back to the Mass of Creation just to get away from Fr. Geoffrey Angeles’s setting of the Ordinary – almost. I long for a day when the choir decides to tackle “Jubilate Deo” and its treasures.

Early Sunday morning is my favorite! Takes me back to childhood memories. Midnight (actually 11 p.m.) is also great, especially in the crypt of Chartres .

It’s been quite a while since I’ve been to an OF Mass so I’m somewhat ignorant about this topic. I’m pretty much an EF enthusiast.

Well then what’s your favourite Gregorian Mass setting? 😉

I attend Mass in the Ordinary Form but we use the Graduale Romanum for both the Propers and Ordinary, so the ordinary Mass settings should be the same as yours with some minor variations.

The one I dislike the most is Mass VIII (de Angelis).
 
I’m a cradle catholic and I don’t know what mass settings are! Could someone please explain the type of variations you’d see? Or have a good resource on the topic?

Interesting! I really happen to like the Missa de Angelis (although my priest hates it!). My favorite setting has to be Vierne’s “Missa Solennelle.” However, I’ve never had the chance to hear it in person.

Unfortunately, it seems like there’s very few really good English Mass settings.

A mass setting is the musical arrangement that is used for the parts of the mass- Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei. Composers have written numerous musical arrangements for the mass. If you type “Mass settings” in YouTube, you can find lots of different examples.

Unfortunately a new translation comes along and you have to start all over.
 
Mass of Christ the Savior was the first setting to be introduced at my parish when the new translation was being implemented. I didn’t have a problem with it at first, but over time, I began to dislike it, and it sounds like the My Little Pony song.

I love Heritage Mass. It’s easily singable and somewhat traditional. Mass of Creation isn’t too bad. I really like Proulx’s A Community Mass, too.

For me it’s mainly from overuse. I sing in a Gregorian schola and we have used it too often because “the laity know it”. We’ve been trying to wean ourselves off of it by using the Ambrosian Gloria instead of the Gloria of Mass VIII, and using a different Kyrie (I for Easter, IV occasionally, XVIIc for Advent and Lent and XI for OT).

Moreover it’s not really “Gregorian” chant as it was written about 3-4 centuries beyond the main Gregorian era. If it can be classified as anything, it would be “neo-Gregorian”.

Sure why not? It beats anything that I currently hear at Mass outside the abbey (French modern Mass hymns are as hokey, poorly composed and un-singable as English ones).

The Gloria and the Kyrie from *Missa de Angelis *are the ones I remember from my childhood. OTOH, the Sanctus I remember is the one from *Mass XVIII. *

XVIII is the easiest Sanctus and our choir uses it a lot for that reason because we try to encourage the faithful to sing the ordinary with us (which is why we overuse the Gloria and Kyrie from Mass VIII).

It’s the Sanctus for the Mass of the Dead, BTW.

I did attend a lot of funerals as a kid.
