Favorite Movies about Saints?

Also, what saint it’s about and why you like it. These are my personal favorites:

“A Man for All Seasons” - St. Thomas More

Probably the most famous biopic about a saint, and definitely the best scripted. Also has the best Henry VIII I’ve ever seen.

“The Reluctant Saint” - St. Joseph of Cupertino

Absolutely charming. Maximillian Schell is just adorable.

“The Prince of Egypt” - Moses

I know biblical figures aren’t technically saints, but I don’t care. Hard to believe that the same studio that made “Shrek” had the brass to attempt something like this.

“Courage to Love” - Ven. Henriette DeLille

Not a lot of people have heard of this woman, but she might potentially become the first African-American saint. I normally don’t care for TV movies - and it is a bit cheesy - but I just can’t help but love it.

“The Scarlet and the Black” - Msgr. Hugh O’Flaherty

He may not have the title, but he’s a saint in my book.
 
Lots of good movies…yet so many more can be made.

Just two for me to mention right now…

Restless Heart…which is the life of St Augustine

AND

Entertaining Angels…Life of Dorothy Day…I know she’s not technically a saint.
 
Also, saint movies that you would like to see made. I think one about Kateri Tekakwitha would be great. And a Joan of Arc movie that doesn’t suck.

A “Prince of Egypt”-style Jesus movie would be amazing.
 
"St. Giuseppe Moscati "(Doctor to the Poor)
and one that is not a saint movie but that I have enjoyed for many years “Marcelino Pan y Vino”

One has been made on Kateri Tekakwitha but I found it left a lot to be desired.
 
Ignatius press has “In her Footsteps” on Kater but I’ve not seen it.

Also, I like the Joan of Ark with Lili Sobieski.

I liked it when I was younger, but it’s wildly inaccurate and doesn’t do justice to Joan’s spitfire awesomeness (none of the movies do). Still, much better than “The Messenger.”

An odd choice, but… “Millions” (2004) by Danny Boyle, who later made “Slumdog Millionaire”, “Trainspotting” and “28 Days Later”. This feel good movie was quite a departure for him.

Damien, a young British Catholic boy and his brother in Manchester, whose mother recently died, find a duffle bag with millions of pounds (just days before the system is about to convert to Euros) in it that a dangerous robber loses after a heist. The boy sees and talks with saints, and they appear throughout the movie to help him and offer him advice, including St. Francis, the Ugandan Martyrs, St. Peter, St. Nicholas, St. Clare, and others that he has learned about from reading the classic (and rather gory) children’s hagiography “Six O’Clock Saints”. Young Danny wants to use the money to help the poor, while his older brother has more capitalistic plans for it.

There are a couple of missteps in it (St. Clare at one point is smoking a hand-rolled cigarette that might be a joint), but there is an essential sweetness to the film, especially the 7 year old hero who hopefully asks each saint if they have seen his mother in Heaven. It is also subtly implied at one point that the saints are not figments of his imagination (St, Joseph helpfully feeds the lines to the children in a Nativity play from off-set). It’s hard for me to see a couple of the scenes without weeping each time.

One of my favorite scenes was sadly cut from the movie but can be seen in the deleted scenes section of the DVD. Pursued by the frightening armed robber, he hides in the attic and prays for help. The camera pans out and we see all saints who have visited him throughout the film kneeling in a circle around him in the dark attic, praying earnestly for him. It’s a wonderful image of saintly intercession.
 
“Monsieur Vincent” about St Vincent de Paul is also a good old B&W film, but it’s in French. I saw it on TV with English subtitles & videotaped it. It was also used in a popular culture class in the 80s or 90s in the Chicago area.
 
A Man for All Seasons is da bestest about my favorite saint from my childhood. Too bad it was only put out on Blu-Ray by an expensive limited run company who let it go out of print.
