Favorite Old Testament book?

Hello all, what is your favorite Old Testament book and why? God bless.
 
The one I’ve read the most often, from start to finish, is the Psalter.

But if you want a personal favourite - and one which contains the clearest foreshadowing, prophetic and otherwise, of the New Testament - then my pick would be the book of the Prophet Isaiah. I’ve been reading it every Easter for some time now. 🙂
 
The Book of Ruth because it is candid about what women had to do in order to survive and it showed the strength and depth of love built by family, ‘sisterhood’, being our ‘brothers’ keeper’, the reward in sacrifice, the tolerance present in the genre of the Old Testament, I could go on and on.
 
Great responses. I prefer Genesis, I guess because it is the beginning and I love the versus about Melchizedek blessing Abram, the offering of bread and wine being so similar to Jesus.
 
Either Tobit or Wisdom
  • Tobit - because of the lesson it teaches: trust in Divine Providence, and anything can happen
  • Wisdom - the advice it gives on life is wonderful
 
The Exodus was the defining event in Jewish history. The Exodus and the events which took place during the exodus from Egypt are what gives the Jews their identity as a nation and as individuals in relationship to God.

I believe that a proper understanding of Exodus will enhance an understanding of Catholicism like no other book.

It’s an even call between the Book of the Wisdom of Sirach and the Book of the Wisdom of Solomon. If I really had to choose.

For me it’s Sirach… Not only this book has its mysterious background for Biblical scholars… The significant changes in its Hebrew, Greek and Latin origins, the different verse numberings.

But especially I like Sirach because I could say this is a catechism and a Biblical book in one in which you can read to get advice on good morals, though some should not be taken literally.

Since my career involved counseling people in times of dire trouble, I like the Book of Job for its insight into human misery and its criticism of people who try to help holding predetermined opinions.
 
At the moment it is Jeremiah, as we have read so much of it these past weeks at daily Mass it has awakened me to the limit of GODs patience and the strength of HIS justice on those who offend HIM.
You cannot read Jeremiah today and not shake in your shoes at the comparison to the USA vs Isreal during Jeremiah’s time. I am wondering if GOD will send the USA a “Jeremiah” before HIS justice is dispensed upon our nation, and if HE would, would we treat him just as the Isrealites treated Jeremiah.
Recommended reading.
 
First and Second Kings because they are so entertaining (deep reason, right?). I read through the Bible cover to cover regularly and when I found myself always looking forward to these books, it dawned on me that these must be my favorites.

They read like an action thriller and are just fun reading. My favorite story from these books begins in 2 Kings chapter 9 where Jehu is secretly anointed king of Israel by a scared young prophet, and encouraged by his companions, rides his chariot furiously to Jezreel to assassinate Joram the current king (and kills Ahaziah the king of Judah while he’s at it), and has wicked Jezebel thrown down from the window where she is eaten by dogs. Great fun. 🙂
 
Psalms, no contest. To me they speak more timelessly to every age than any other OT book. Also, they speak to just about every life situation: joy, sorrow, fear, etc.
