Hi CAF community,

While this isn’t exactly related to Eastern Catholicism, I feel that this is the most appropriate place to put it, although if the Moderators wish to move it, they are free to do so (obviously).

What is your favorite part of the Latin Church (i.e. spirituality, music, rituals, devotions, theological emphases etc.)?

I’m interested in hearing both Latin and Eastern Catholics’ perspectives on this.

Thanks very much,

I love Gregorian Chant, singing the Gloria, and the Confetior. I love the liturgical season of Advent and especially Christmas in the Latin church.

I sometimes like the brevity of Masses in the latin church, comparitively.

Sometimes, that brevity is not for a good reason, i.e., liturgical abuse. Nonetheless, I have found that the Mass of the Latin Church (Tridentine or Novus Ordo) takes shorter than Byzantine/Coptic/Syriac/Chaldean Divine Liturgies, Low Mass especially.

There are a number of things I love about the Latin/Roman Church. Having grown up a Roman Catholic, it was a central part of my formation spiritually.

I love what other Eastern Catholic scholars have observed in the Roman Church, i.e. it’s ability to self-evaluate with an honest eye and then reform itself accordingly. The reforms aren’t always the greatest, but I do appreciate the West’s ability to take a deep and honest look at itself and then try and right any wrongs.

I also love the multiplicity of approaches to the spiritual life and the charisms of the different religious orders. It is a system that doesn’t work well in the East, but suits the Western character very well indeed.

I love the scholastic approach to theology - the true scholastic approach of St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Albert the Great, and St. Bonaventure, not the “Neo-Scholastic approach.” Although it comes under a great deal of criticism from certain segments of the East as being too “rationalistic,” I believe these criticisms are based off of a misunderstanding and caricatured view of what scholasticism really is.

The Architecture. The Latin Church in ages past certainly knew how to build 'em so to speak.

I hope that the creeping Iconoclasm that has been skulking around your Church in the shadows is exorcised, quickly.

St Peter the Syrian [of Antioch and Rome]
What are you talking about? Peter was “white,” just like Jesus and Santa .

I applaud your comment, anyhow. My favorite part of the Latin Church is their true liturgical patrimony over its current general condition (although I must say there are quite a few TLMs and Dominican Rite masses offered in the NY area; people in these liturgies seem to believe in God as opposed to the 6:30PM sunday guitar masses that attract the folk of obligation).

Ho! Ho! Ho! :christmastree1: 😃

I haven’t heard of many Dominican Rite Masses in the area. The few I’ve seen mentioned are always at odd hours on odd days. I’d really love to experience Conventual Mass in the Dominican Rite but I suppose that’s wishful thinking. Carmelite Rite even more so. :o

The Dominican House of Studies in DC had a Dominican Rite High Mass last year which was quite nice. It was the first one offered there in years… It was wonderful to hear the friars all chanting the Dominican melodies for the propers and ordinary. The prostration during the confiteor was also a sight to behold. I will never understand the Dominican fear of hearing chains clink on a thurible. 😛

Hey everyone. Former Byzantine Catholic (Now Orthodox) who grew up with both rites of the church.

My Favorite thing about the Latin Rite was and always will be the Holy Pictures of Jesus and Mary and the Saints.
despite my love of Orthodox iconography there is a warm gentleness about Catholic art. The Images of the Virgin holding the Christ Child with the tender look on both their faces is beautiful. They probably sustained my childhood faith.

My favorite part of the Latin Church is her ancient, solemn Rite of Exorcism (pre-Vatican II). It is a powerful tool in combating demonic possession.

While there is a more recent form of the rite, the more ancient form is still used by many exorcists. It is indeed very powerful - and also, alone among Christian rites of exorcism, excites the fancies of Hollywood writers…

Most of the movie makers get it badly wrong. (I’ve been involved with a licit exorcism. It’s scary, yet also somewhat comforting at the same time.)

For me, the two things I miss from the Roman Rite are taking the chalice in hand to receive, and the singing of a wider variety of hymns. (Our parish has strongly adopted the psalmody for the communion of the faithful; no more “Give me your Body O Christ”…)

Still, the rest of the Byzantine rite is what keeps me going to church.

My favorite part would have to be reciting the names in the book of the sick and praying for said individuals, this is a custom we don’t have.

By Latin, I assume you mean Roman?
This is a very common misconception. Latin Catholic is not synonymous with Roman-Rite Catholic – in fact, the Latin Church contains several rite: the Roman Rite, the Bragan Rite, the Ambrosian Rite, the Mozarabic Rite, etc.

So I would assume that when Latinitas said “the Latin Church”, that includes Roman Catholics, but without excluding the other Western Catholics. 🙂
