I too have lived under every Pope since Pius XII. I would have to say in order, Pius XII, JPII & Benedict XV followed by Francis I.

I love Pope Francis, as I believe he is exactly what was needed at this time. However, I would have to say Saint Pope John Paul II, as we were blessed to have a private audience with him. Simply amazing.

  1. Pope Leo XIII for Rerum Novarum
  2. Pope John XXIII for Pacem in Terris
  3. Pope Benedict XVI for his Theological work as Joseph Ratzinger… particularly the “Principles of Catholic Theology”
  4. Pope Francis for being the Pastor that brings the promise of VII to life - not to discount JPII’s role as the philosopher and BXVI as the theologian of VII… just different.

These are my two, also, and for similar reasons. I am not Catholic, but I really like the humility and genuineness of Pope Francis and his ability to break down barriers. I listen to and take to heart much what he says and think he is great for Christianity.

I also liked Pope John Paul II because he was the first pope I ever saw person. I saw him at Christmas Eve Mass at St Peter’s in Rome back in 1978 while in college studying in Europe. I happened to be with a group of friends – most of whom were Catholic — and we just so happened to be in Rome at the time. They invited me to come along and I’m glad I did. It was a wonderful and memorable experience.

Every pope faces different challenges during their reign. To compare and say one is best is difficult and maybe unfair.

Over the centuries, popes had to deal with the fall of the RE, islamic invasions, crusades, reformations, schisms and heresies, world wars, being under siege and plagues.

Those that faced the greatest challenges are thought to be the greatest, but that is unfair to those who didn’t have the same challenges.
“Wherever 2 or 3 are gathered in My Name; therefore I am in there midst” Mt. 18:20.

The unfailing promise of Jesus to sens the Holy Spirit [Mt 28:20] & to Personally warrant the teachings of HIS Catholic Church [John 17:17-20] are the only reasonable explanation of HOW the RCC has managed to exist for some 2,000 years now.

JOHN 15:16
“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide; so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you
.”

My friend do not discount the influence of the Holy Spirit in selecting Popes:rolleyes:

God Bless you,

Patrick

I would have to say (in order):
**
Pope St. John XXIII**. For his warmth and humanity. In MY opinion, I wish more popes were like him.
**
Pope Benedict XVI**. For his faithfulness to authentic Catholic teaching. Most brilliant Christian theologian of our time - FATHER Ratzinger was invited to the Second Vatican Council. How many other non-Bishops were asked to attend?
**
Pope St. Pius X**. Also for his faithfulness to authentic Catholic theology and doctrine; and for ordering the codification of the first “Code of Canon Law”.

Im just curious as to everyone’s favorite successors of St Peter are. The ones I admire the most are definitely JPII and Gregory XIII. Though I see a lot of Francis-bashing around here and Im not quite sure why.

As an outsider my view might be a little different, or it might not.

My favorite Bishop of Rome in my lifetime has got to be Francis. Despite all the press exaggeration of what he is doing and what he stands for, I still like the tone he’s set for the RCC emphasizing help for the less fortunate and mercy. It’s an inspiration for all of Christianity. And his reaction to church governance matters has been good as well even if his ability to effect change gets hampered by others from time to time. That and as a Jesuit I’m inclined to like him having been taught by that order throughout my secondary education.

All time, I’d also include Saint Peter, Saint Gregory (I) the Great, and John XXIII among my favorites.

Several, actually. I don’t disagree that Pope Benedict XVI is one of the great theologians of the 20th century, but he was one of a number of periti at the Second Vatican Council.

John XX. I think he is one of the most overlooked popes. 😃

Other than him, Servant of God John Paul I.

Dude I agree with Pope John XX and John Paul I is still living with Elvis and the “real” Sister Lucia. (If you know your conspiracy theories of course)

No doubt Pope John Paul II was an amazing Pope and dubbed the name “The Peoples Pope”, Pope John Paul II held the office of Pope for 26 years. He upheld the traditions and beliefs of the Catholic Church - he was loved and respected by many, not just Catholics. I remember the assassination attempt on his life in 1981. He was very well traveled and people from all over had a deep respect for Pope John Paul II.

I have a great deal of respect for Pope Francis, he can stand his own and is tough. He chose his papal name due to the humility and austerity associated with St. Francis of Assisi. Pope Francis does a lot of charitable work for the homeless and the poor. His smile is contagious.

Both Popes have held true to the original doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church

Couldn’t have said it better myself (though I have never had the privilege of being schooled by Jesuits, or for that matter, any clergy.

St. Peter, and Pope Benedict XVI. Mainly because I’ve read their writings. Honestly, I should read more encyclicals by popes.

Pope St. Pius X
Pope Pius XII

These are my two favorites…brilliant minds working to restore tradition

My favorite is our current Pope, Francis.

Pope Clement VIII issued revised editions of the Vulgate (1598), the Breviary, and the Missal.
