Favorite Prayer Book

I was at a Catholic book store today and I came across the “Catholic Pocket Prayer Book.” catholiccompany.com/catholic-pocket-prayer-book-p1003327/. It’s smaller than a deck of cards so it fits right in my pocket and has a good selection of prayers from the Act of Faith to the Rosary to Stations of the Cross to prayers to individual Saints. It is lacking in some respects (it doesn’t seem to have any prayers for the dead). But it got me wondering if there are other small everyday carry prayer books that people have or would suggest, especially if they are more geared toward Traditional prayers and devotions.

My favorite prayer book is one I found at a homeschooler conference a few years go, from a vendor who was selling used books. It is the tiniest little thing - it fits in my hand, and has a black leather-like cover. I think it’s from the 1920s, and it has beautiful artwork inside, and more prayers and devotions than I’ve found in some larger books.

When my grandmother died in her home, it was just me and my uncle there until my dad and my other uncle arrived. No priest was called (sadly). There was no one to pray over her. I had this little book with me, which had the traditional prayers for the dead, so I read them while kneeling at her bedside, with my uncle kneeling at the foot of her bed. I was so grateful to have that little book with me - it is a memory that will stay with me forever.

I try to always keep this little book in my purse - it has been such a comfort to have it with me on so many occasions.

The Liturgy of the Hours or one of its current approved monastic variants.
 
my favorite is the pocket book of Catholic prayer. you can get on amazon for cheap 🙂 its good for understanding the Mass more fully and praying the Rosary 😃

Now that’s not fair brother…

We are all posting like $8 books and you go ahead and post a $35 book which I don’t really have money for and so didn’t really need to know about.

But it is pretty… and it has mysterious Eastern Catholic words like “Pascha” and “Akathists” in it… and it has ribbons… and I want to pray it…

So now I’m going to have to skip another six or seven lunches so that I can save up the money to get this book. See what you’ve gone and done!

I wish you fancy religious would just leave us regular laymen and our $8 books alone. 😃

Now, If you are a “Roman” 😉 through and through, especially a Tradionalist Roman Catholic, I would highly recommend either:

BLESSED BE GOD- Original reprint from 1961, gold edged pages, silk bookmark, and It has ALOT of traditional prayers. For just about every occasion you could think of. It has the readings of the epistle and Gospel for every sunday in the year, devotions to just about anything, order of the MASS (Tridentine MASS), morning, evening and night prayers,

My bad.

It was hard for me to get. Had to save up for it myself.

Here is a cheaper one if you do not mind it being from the Orthodox, ACROD (American Carpatho-Russia Orthodox Diocese of the USA).

Come To Me Prayer Book

It is $12.00.

We use it at the Byzantine Monastery I attend for Sunday Divine Liturgy. We just replace the commemoration for the Ecumenical Patriarch with the Universal Pontiff and Metropolitan Stefan.

I use the prayers before communion and after communion from it as well.

Its not bad if you don’t mind it being Orthodox (which I don’t).
