I’ve found the rosary to be the most powerful prayer. After the rosary I always say the following prayer:

Prayer to the Holy Spirit
“Oh, Holy Spirit, beloved of my soul…I adore You. Enlighten me, guide me, strengthen me, console me. Tell me what I should do … give me Your orders. I promise to submit myself to all that You desire of me and to accept all that You permit to happen to me. Let me only know Your will.”

Here’s a favorite of mine when I was younger:

There are four corners on my bed.
There are four angels overhead,
Saint Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John,
God bless the bed that I lie on.

And if I die before I wake,
I pray to God my soul to take,
And if any evil comes to me,
Blessed Lady waken me.

As was said above, the Rosary is my favorite too.

The Memorare is my second favorite.

I never heard it this way, though I do like it.

My childhood version went:

Now I lay me down to sleep.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take.

There are four corners on my bed.

I do like yours better but I might have trouble switching at this stage in my life. Old stuff flows off my tongue much easier than the new. Ever have that problem? As a reader at church, I always worry about older more familiar versions of the readings pre-empting the newer lingo, leaving me in the middle of a sentence with no place to go (or hide.)

The Anima Christi:

Soul of Christ, sanctify me
Body of Christ, save me
Blood of Christ, inebriate me
Water from the Side of Christ, wash me
O Good Jesus, hear me
Within your wounds, hide me
From the Evil One, protect me
Separated from you, let me never be
At the hour of my death call me
And close to You bid me
So that with your angels and saints I may be,
Praising you forever and ever.

I use it in conjunction with the Jesus Prayer and some other prayers as my own personal Chaplet.

I read this one here a awhile back…but have forgotten who posted it, I have it written on a little card sitting on my desk at work:

ANGEL SENT BY GOD TO GUIDE ME, BE MY LIGHT AND WALK BESIDE ME BE MY GUARDIAN AND PROTECT ME AND ON THE PATHS OF LIFE DIRECT ME
AMEN

Lots of great ones posted here. I particularly like the Amina Christi and the prayer of Thomas Merton. 👍

One I have always been partial to for Eucharistic preparation is the prayer attributed to St. Francis of Assisi that used to be part of the preparation for the daily Mass on EWTN:

Let the whole of humanity tremble, the whole world shake and the heavens exult when our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God, is present on the altar in the hands of a priest!

O admirable heights and sublime lowliness! O sublime humility! O humble sublimity! That the Lord of the universe, God and the Son of God, so humbles Himself that for our salvation He hides Himself under the little form of bread!

Look at the humility of God and pour out your hearts before Him! Humble yourselves as well, that you may be exalted by Him. Therefore, hold back nothing of yourselves for yourselves so that He who gives Himself totally to you may receive you totally. Amen.

Life is short. Pray hard. :gopray2:

Blessings.

Thank you, Lord for my Guardian Angle, body, and soul.
Unite us, Oh Blessed Trinity,
So we can serve your purpose in heaven and on earth.
We ask this in the +, Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

From the Grateful Mysteries

This and the Memore are my two most favorite prayers. My husband and kids already have orders that I want the Anima Christi on my funeral cards when I die! 👍

Mine is a precommunion prayer of St John Chrysostom:
Adam,

What an enriching prayer that is! I’ve been reciting it prior to receiving Our Lord in the Eucharist for nearly 50 years now, and I still believe it to be one of the most beautiful, humbling prayers ever composed. I say it silently prior to Communion when I’m attending a Roman Catholic Mass… still, there is nothing like joining with the entire Church congregation and reciting it aloud immediately before receiving Our Lord, as is the case in the Byzantine Catholic Divine Liturgy.

I’m also very fond of the Jesus Prayer

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner!”

As has already been pointed out, one can recite this prayer numerous times throughout the day. In fact, The Eastern Churches share a special devotion to this prayer, intending that one achieve the point of prayer where the individual’s “heart” takes over and prays this prayer automatically on the individual’s behalf, thus fulfilling St. Paul’s command to “pray without ceasing.” A wonderful account of this prayer can be found in the popular book, The Way of a Pilgrim (from whence, by the way, I chose my screen name!) 😉

a pilgrim

Prayer of St. Francis, I don’t know it though, we sing it at Church.

a pilgrim saith: say it silently prior to Communion when I’m attending a Roman Catholic Mass…and I responde: As do i. It puts me right into the state of mind where all i focus on is our Lord and Savior in the Eucharist (even to the point of forget of what is going on around me and who else is there). This is especially important if i cannot say the Precommunion Office and prayers.

Christ saves,
Adam

Anyone remember this one. In the old days, we used to say it after mass. I still pray it when I can remember the words. Most of them are however eched into my consciousness.

O God, our refuge and our strength, look down with favor upon Thy people who cry to Thee, and by the intercession of the glorious and immaculate Virgin Mary Mother of God, of St. Joseph, her spouse, of Thy holy apostles Peter and Paul, and all of the saints, mercifully and graciously hear the prayers we pour forth to Thee for the conversion of sinners, and for the liberty and exaltation of our Holy Mother the Church. Through the same Christ our Lord, Amen.

one of my absolute favourites, from the old sarum rite:

Hail for evermore, Thou most holy Flesh of Christ;
sweet to me before and beyond all things beside.
To me a sinner may the Body of our Lord Jesus Christ
be the Way and the Life

My favorite prayer:

Be still and know I am God.

My other favorite prayer:

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You.

Amen.

This is one that I use and am trying to get my wife to turn to often (she worries too much).

:gopray2: Jesus, I surrender.
:gopray2: Jesus, I love you.
:gopray2: Jesus, I trust in you. :getholy:

The Memorare, The Magnificat, which is so resonant and so lyrical that I can just feel the Blessed Mother’s heart bursting with joy as she was saying this, The Anglelus, The Rosary, St. Michael the Archangel prayer, which we say after Mass, and the Animus Christi:
Soul of Christ, sanctify me
Body of Christ, save me
Blood of Christ, inebriate me
Water from the side of Christ, wash me
Passion of Christ, strengthen me
Oh good Jesus, hear me,
Within your wounds, hide me
permit me never to be separated from you,
From the malignant enemy, defend me,
At the hour of my death, call me and bid me come to you that with your angels and saints, I may praise you forever and ever. Amen
