If Tomorrow Never Comes. Garth Brooks. He wrote this for his wife, then in a couple years, took up with that ********** Trisha Yearwood:mad:

Moral of the story: Never write a love song for your wife.

Marty Robbins wrote “My Woman, My Woman, My Wife” in 1969-70 for his wife, Marizona (nee Baldwin), whom he was married to from 1948 to his death in 1982.

Awwww . I didn’t know that and I was a huge Marty Robbins fan. Saw him many times, but I was very young then. Probably didn’t pay too much attention.

I bet a lot of Johnny Cash’s songs were for June too.

‘Soave sia il vento’ from Mozart’s Così fan tutte and the ‘Hab’ mir’s gelobt/Ist ein traum’ sequence at the end of Richard Strauss’ ‘Rosenkavalier’.

How could I forget this song??? I’m a HUGE Marty Robbins fan (God rest his soul), and I think this is one of the most powerful heartfelt tributes to a spouse ever!

There’s also “Claudette” and “Oh, Pretty Woman”, written by Roy Orbison about his first wife; they divorced because of her infidelities (not his), but they were reconciled and remarried, and she was later killed in a traffic accident.

Side note: Another ballad I love, sung by Orbison – “She’s a Mystery to Me” – was written by Bono and The Edge of U2. Didn’t know that till but 5 minutes ago.

I love the line, “She tears again my bleeding heart…” :crying:

Emo, hold the whine. That’s how you do it. 👍

I forgot about the beautiful song ‘The Next Time I Fall’, a duet with Peter Cetera and Amy Grant. I’m watching this video right now;)

That’s awesome! I heard that song on the radio a few months ago and just about melted.

I’m a total romantic, and love romantic songs… don’t care if they’re sappy or not, I just love 'em. I guess one of the upsides of leaving home and living in a girls-only dorm is that maybe I can get all sentimental over those songs without all those brothers raising skeptical eyes at me. Not that they’re all sappy, of course… some of them are quite good. But in those cases, they prefer to focus on the good music rather than the romance. 😛

Browsing through my collection, and listening them by song title and my favourite artist regardless of who wrote it or originally performed it, I have:

“Looking Forward” - CSNY
“True Love Ways” - Buddy Holly
“My Sweet Lady” - John Denver
“Flesh and Blood” - Johnny Cash
“Here Comes the Knight” - Van Morrison (doubly romantic because it has swords and shields)
“L-O-V-E” - Natalie Cole
“In the Garden” - Van Morrison (not only thoroughly romantic, but such beautiful imagery as well)
“Can’t Help Falling In Love” - Elvis Presley
“Your Song” - Elton John
“Always On My Mind” - Willie Nelson (I do love Elvis’ version, but for me it has to be second-best)
“Isn’t It So” - Stephen Stills
“Memories Are Made Of This” - Dean Martin
“Harvest Moon” - Neil Young melts
“Oh, What A Dream” - Johnny Cash
“Beyond the Sea” - Bobby Darin
“Where You Lead” - Carole King
“Will Ye Go Lassie Go” - The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem
“The Way You Look Tonight” - Frank Sinatra
“When I Fall In Love” - Sam Cooke melts
“Emotionally Yours” - Bob Dylan
“My Girl” - The Temptations
“Quality Street” - Van Morrison
“Sweet Thames Flow Softly” - Planxty
“The Dutchman” - Liam Clancy & Tommy Makem
“Carrying A Torch” - Van Morrison
“Embraceable You” - Judy Garland

Don’t know that one, but the title brings to mind, “Oh My Lady” by the Stampeders, and “Oh Pretty Lady” by Trooper
“Here Comes the Knight” - Van Morrison (doubly romantic because it has swords and shields)
“Have I told You Lately” by Van Morrison. This one has a nice Christian element to it, as well.
~snip~
“The Way You Look Tonight” - Frank Sinatra
“Wonderful Tonight” - Eric Clapton
“When I Fall In Love” - Sam Cooke melts
“You Send Me” by Sammy as well
“The Dutchman” - Liam Clancy & Tommy Makem
“Carrickfergus” – either Makem & Clancy, or Loreena McKennitt

Also try “Twelfth of Never” by Johnny Mathis
“Play Me” by Neil Diamond
“The Look of Love” by Dusty Springfield
“Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” by The Platters
“I Only Have Eyes For You” by The Flamingoes
“Come Softly To Me” by The Fleetwoods
“Sleepwalk” by Santo & Johnny

And in my mind, “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin…because at school dances in the late 70s/early 80s, it was a guaranteed 9-minute last-dance 😃

I can’t believe I forgot…

“Con te partiro (Time to Say Goodbye)”, by Andrea Bocelli – with or without Sarah Brightman
“Il Mondo” by Patrizio Buane

Oh, yes, that one is beautiful! And on the Sarah Brightman train of thought, some of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stuff is very romantic. “Unexpected Song” may be a little on the sappy side, but I love it all the same.

And I love Morrison’s “Have I Told You Lately”. Not only is it just beautiful, but it doesn’t have that Christian element in it as well. I’ve heard one or two places that he actually wrote it as a love song to God… never heard it definitely verified, though. Anyway, I’ve always loved Morrison’s songs for their romance… not just in the sense of romantic love, but additionally in a broader way. There’s something very Chestertonian about the way he writes. “The Street Only Knew Your Name” is such a romantic piece, and so is “The Healing Game”.
“Carrickfergus” – either Makem & Clancy, or Loreena McKennitt

The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem have such a treasure trove of beautiful Irish and Scottish pieces, don’t they? Like I said, “Will Ye Go Lassie Go” (and there’s an exquisite video on YouTube of Judy Collins and Pete Seeger doing that one together)… then there’s “Red is the Rose”, and “Eileen Aroon”, and “Ballinderry”. Of course those old folk songs often seem to have a strong touch of sorrow as well.
And in my mind, “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin…because at school dances in the late 70s/early 80s, it was a guaranteed 9-minute last-dance

Yeah, those personal associations really make certain songs very romantic to the individual, even if the song itself wouldn’t be considered classic romance (the way “Can’t Help Falling In Love With You” is). I’ve always found “Helpless” by Neil Young to be romantic, and “Shooting Star” by Bob Dylan (I think from the “Oh Mercy” album?) always touched a romantic chord in me.
