Favorite Saints and Patron Saints

Who are yours?

One of my Patron Saints and also a favorite Saint is Saint Thomas More. A man who stood by his principles and died for them. Anyone who has not seen “A Man for All Seasons” needs to run. not walk, and rent it. It won the Oscar for Best Picture, Best Actor and maybe Best Supporting Actor, I can’t remember.

He is also the Patron Saints for attorneys. I have his “Prayer for Attorneys” hanging on the wall in my law office.
 
St. Mary Magdalene, she is my patroness. She is a convert, like me. She is the one who led me to Christ’s Church. St. Anselm called her “friend of God”. 🙂

I have several that I have a deep respect for although it wouldn’t be accurate to say I have a particular devotion to.

One of them is St Angela De Merici. She founded the Ursulines and was instrumental in educating young women of her community which was unheard of during her time. She even had the guts to tell the Pope “no” when he asked her to move to Rome and set up there. 😉

One person who is not a saint (yet) is Fulton Sheen. I feel I have a very good friend and kindred spirit in him. I love his deep discipleship to Our Lord and his profound devotion to Our Lady.

I have been told some very good news is hoped for in relation to his cause for canonization sometime early this fall. 👍

Again another “not yet a saint” whom I have a profound, deep and abiding respect is John Paul the Great. His death was instrumental in my own personal healing of a crisis of faith I was experience.

In his passing, I found the beginning of my spiritual healing.
 
St. Anne Line, my confirmation saint. She is a convert (like me!) that was hanged for harboring a priest in England during the early 1600s. She is quoted as saying, “I am sentenced to die for harbouring a Catholic priest, and so far I am from repenting for having so done, that I wish, with all my soul, that where I have entertained one, I could have entertained a thousand” just before she was hanged. There’s a film comapny in England that makes movies of saints’ lives and I believe they just recently completed one about her.

And so recent. I wish a really good movie would be made about his life.
 
Saint Thomas More is also a hero of mine, as well as St. Augustine, St. Ambrose, St. Francis, St. Maximilian Kolbe & so many more!

St. Thomas Aquinas is a favorite Saint of mine. He had a lot of knowledge and was very deserving of his title. His teachings of theology and philosophy are still used to this day.

My other is St. Peter. It is amazing how he stood by his beliefs even when threatened to be crucified upside-down.

When he is canonized, my favorite will be John Paul II for his work, wisdom, and kindness.
 
St. Therese, the Little Flower.

Her “Little Way” of serving God each day is an inspiration.

She has also literally sent me roses from Heaven, thus my moniker.
 
Saint Expededis,wonderful for when you are having a difficult time financially. 🙂
 
Francis of Assisi, because the dude was hard core to a degree that shames us all. And he could talk to animals. Admit it – you wish you were that cool.

Saint Saraphim of Sarov, because he glowed in the dark. That’s almost a scary level of holiness.

And Fred Rogers (Mister Rogers). This guy was without question the holiest American in my lifetime, or my parent’s lifetimes. If he had been Orthodox he would have been declared a saint the week after his death. I remember a newspaper article about his car getting stolen. His car was stolen, so he went to the police station and filed a report. The newspaper reporter at the station (there’s always one) got wind of it and wrote something in the paper, a “Mister Rogers’ car was stolen!!!” kind of thing, with a description of where it was and what it was. A couple days later his car was anonymously returned with a note of apology attached. The note said word to the effect of, “We’re so sorry. If we had known it was your car we would never have taken it.”

They weren’t afraid of him like people are afraid of mob bosses. They were ashamed by his love. Mister Rogers loved everyone unconditionally, and they had returned that love by hurting him. Wow. Would that I had such an effect on people. Yes, would that I had such an effect on people. Just thinking of that makes me cry. “If we had known it was your car we would never have taken it.” Them’s heavy words.

If America had a patron saint it would be Mister Rogers.
 
St. Augustine of Hippo and St. Athanasius. O Lord, please raise up men such as these for our generation. We need them big time!
