Favorite song by Judy Garland in a movie?

I have been a fan of Judy Garland since I first saw her in Wizard of Oz when I was a little girl.

Although I love so many of her performances, my favorite is probably Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

I would love to have seen her perform live.

Her career began at such a young age and her energy always came through onscreen. She seemed so vivacious and giving of herself. I wish her personal life had not been so tragic. Her music brought so much joy.

Anyone else a fan of this classic Hollywood star?

It’s hard to have a favorite where Judy is concerned. Such a blazing talent, and such a tragic life. And mostly not her own fault.

Over the Rainbow is my favorite as well. No one else performs this song with as much feeling as Judy Garland (not even soprano Kathleen Battle and Judy Collins). Her later performances of the song are even more moving since they contain in her voice a lifetime of experience and heartache. Another favorite is The Man that Got Away, which Judy Garland sings even better than Frank Sinatra, and that is saying something. Two others include Smile (also sung with tears in the voice) and A Merry Little Christmas.

In my experience, the only other female singer who can approach the pathos of Judy Garland’s singing, which is etched into the timbre of her voice, is the French chanteuse, Edith Piaf.
 
One of my favorite movies of all times is “In the Good Old Summertime” starring Van Johnson and Judy Garland. As others have said, “I don’t care” is a great song. She sings and dances to it in the movie.

My dad, who passed away in 1978, adored Judy Garland, and that’s one of the reasons I like her too.

Wasn’t she given drugs in order to keep going on the set of films, which then made her problems worse? That’s one of the big issues that I have with Hollywood, in that they don’t (or didn’t) care about the actors.

That being said, my favorite Garland song is probably “The Man That Got Away,” though it’s difficult to decide, since there are so many good ones.

Exactly. What she was given in childhood by her mother started a life-long battle with addiction to chemicals that eventually ended her life prematurely.

It’s hard to improve upon Tony Bennett singing “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” - but frosting the cake with a Judy Garland duet does the trick. Their warmth and joy in doing it is part of the charm.

Tony and Judy show off their “well TRAINed” voices 😉 in an imaginary musical rail trip across America before that windup - singing solos to one another along the way.

Night Train / Lullaby Of Broadway (Tony) / Carolina In The Morning (Judy) / Kansas City (Tony) / When The Midnight Choo-Choo Leaves For Alabam’ (Judy).

Judy, apparently, loves to belt 'em out like Al Jolson when she does one of his selections. 👍
 
Somewhere ove rhte Rainbow - and my daughter’s nursery is going to be wizard of oz themed 🙂 It is my favorite movie.

thank you! that was great! I forgot she had her own show during the Golden Age of television. Her show puts today’s programming to shame. Tony Bennett is great!

thanks to all who posted those great videos. I wonder who owns the rights to her old shows?
