What are your favorite songs that sometimes you hear in mass…even thought some of them make me cringe a little because they do not belong in liturgy.

Or if you’re still Protestant or else…your favorite song.

"A Mighty Fortress is Our God" Sorry, I’m Lutheran :o
"My Hope is Built on Nothing Less" esp. to the tune of the Navy Hymn
"What Child is This" esp the second verse - so powerful and therefore ignored in “secular versions”
"For All Thy Saints" and
"Ah Holy Jesus"

How Great Thou Art and Lift High The Cross are wonderful hymns.

I forgot to mention my favorite hymn as a child was

The first song I heard after becoming a Christian was Selah’s version of “It Is Well With My Soul”. It remains one of my favorites.

One of the funny things I ran into is that some of the Mormon hymns I grew up with were the same tunes, but they had changed the words to fit their theology. I remember hearing “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus” intro during Mass and starting to sing the Mormon words… as we take the bread and water… I sing really loud and everyone around me shrugged and giggled a bit. “There goes that new convert again!” LOL I love all kinds of music, from contemporary Christian to the good old hymns. I find they are very rich in doctrine.

Anyway, that’s my :twocents:

My favorite song for my non-Catholic friends who claimed to have already been found but seem still at the dark end of the tunnel…

Mine is “You are near”.

Me too. Both songs brings tears to my eyes. I can play the second one on my guitar. It inspired me even after leaving the seminary. I still feel it playing in my heart. Can’t explain why God continues to call me when I’m married with 3 children.

This song also was dear to me when I was in the churches of Christ. Now it seems so incomplete. But it will always stir emotion inside of me.

“Amazing Grace”…I love the song…it brings fond memories of my Protestant family before actually getting to practice Catholicism or even realize I was Catholic until my teens. It also stirs up great emotions with my wife and brings tears to her eyes at mass when we sing it. At the same time it drives me nuts because of the message like its all done now…don’t need to do anything else. But it is a beautiful song. But I’d prefer to stick to liturgical songs in mass.

As you can tell… I have varied taste in music. It is more about the words than the style.

Maybe you can become a deacon. We have one in our church, he’s married with two boys. Maybe you need to do this. Pray on it.
