Sometimes I listen to soundtracks more than anything else.

These are some of my favorites:

Forrest Gump
Return to Me
A Charlie Brown Christmas
Somewhere in Time
The Big Chill (the album is the best part of the movie)
Mona Lisa Smile (I love Seal’s rendition of Mona Lisa Smile)
Cold Mountain
Armeggedon

I want to buy O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Peggy Sue Got Married.

I would love to hear your recommendations or favorites…

God bless,
Karen

I’e always been partial to the soundtrack to The Mission and also Amadeus.

Are you familiar with those? It might not be everyone’s cup o’ tea.

We have a huge collection of soundtracks. Some favorites are the following (in no particular order):

Fargo
O Brother, Where Are Thou?
A Mighty Wind
The Shining
Bagdad Cafe (my current favorite)
Wings of Desire (my son listens to this over and over and over)
Amadeus
The Ladykillers (GREAT Gospel choir music!)

What? No “Godfather” ?! 😛
As a matter of fact, one of my favorites to listen to is Mob Hits I and II. It is a music tribute to the Mob movies like The Godfather I, II & III, Married To The Mob, Goodfellas(hard to watch that movie, love the music), Casino, Donnie Brasco & Bronx Tale.
Another soundtrack I like is The Commitments I & II. Some others that come to mind are, Dirty Dancing, Pure Country, Grease, The Sound of Music.

My wife really likes the sound track from “A night at the Roxbury”. 👍

De Lovely
Moulin Rouge
Big Lebowski
Forrest Gump
O Brother Where Art Thou
Notting Hill
Shrek
Shrek2
Kill Bill V1
Kill Bill V2
Jackie Brown
Pulp Fiction
The Devils Rejects

I haven’t heard those before, but I’ve always wanted to see those movies. 🙂 Heard they were great.

Both The Mission and Amadeus relied almost exclusively on classical compositions.

I think the very best soundtracks came from the 30s to the 60s - The Sea Hawk, Captain Blood, Robin Hood, Gone with the Wind, The Magnificent Seven, Ben Hur, Cleopatra, El Cid, Barry Lyndon, etc.

John Williams has written many a memorable score but has become formulaic today - not a single theme stood out in the last Star Wars. I have a good sized collection of sound tracks on vinyl and some on CD but I couldn’t tell you the last time a soundtrack jumped out enough to make me want to buy it. I think the advent of DVDs has something to do with this.

OH I forgot to include Barry Lyndon in my list!

Actually, I own most of the soundtracks to the movies of the following directors because they choose their music so carefully (and they’re my favorite directors):

Stanley Kubrick (2001, Eyes Wide Shut, Barry Lyndon, The Shining…)
The Coen Brothers (The Ladykillers, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Fargo, The Man Who Wasn’t There…)

Well, I can tell you one other soundtrack I will not be buying: Alexander. The music is insipid. I kept expecting Chariots of Fire at the Battle of Gaugumelah. Compare this music to the siege of Minas Tirith. Sheesh.
