Independence Day hands down. My oldest and I saw it here in Canada when it first came out, and since we always discussed the “author’s message” in a movie, we were talking about the one in this movie (that there is only one Operating System for all the computers in the universe, and the only guy who knows it is at lunch) when we noticed that the Canadians had picked up an entirely different message: “There go the *&&^%$% Americans saving the world AGAIN!” 😃 The offspring turned to one of them and said gravely, “You’re welcome.”

There also was an underlying message in having this movie made during the administration of Bill “Ah LOATHE thuh militurry” Clinton – showing a former Vietnam fighter pilot President leading the world. Personally I found it a secret giggle.

“The Day The Earth Stood Still” is actually a seriously fascist movie if you consider that the real message is “Either you run your planet the way our robots want you to, or we’ll kill you.” Coming that soon after World War II, this theme is acutely uncomfortable to a family with Jewish roots. (Also if you have ever read any of the Berserker novels, or considered the Cylons or the Daleks, you will realize that robots with that degree of autonomy would think of human beings as Not-Us and eventually would turn against them completely. (Also if you have a scientist son in the house, he would have pointed out to you that given the mileage Mr. Klaatu claimed to have travelled to get to Earth, he was in fact coming from Mars, which is ridiculous.)

Predator
The Aliens movies are good too (the first 2 anyway)
Sorry, I picked nothing you can watch with the kids. 😊

Titan A.E. is a fun animated flick for the family.
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith was also good.

That’s why I’m down on it. (You are not seriously suggesting that there’s a necessary link between popularity and quality, are you?) I don’t think it was a completely worthless show. I just don’t get why it was good enough to run that long, when many better shows were canceled.

My point about its longevity was that there must have been quite a few people who thought it was good. How often did you watch the show? It was not a series for casual viewing. For the most part, if you missed an episode, following episodes would not make as much sense.

Star Trek: First Contact
Independence Day
Galaxy Quest
Star Wars Episodes IV V, and VI( from 1977 to 80’s)
Stargate
Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind
These are all movies I will watch again and again without getting tired of them.

I also like Forbidden Planet, it’s one of the older SCI-Fi movies from the 50’s that has really held up well. Many others now seem so dated.

The Stargate series kinda grows on you. I really didn’t care for Stargate SG-1 when I first saw an episode, but I really liked Stargate Atlantis and still do. Then I went back and watched all the SG-1 episodes. I enjoyed the straight to DVD
Stargate Continuum as well.
I agree with whoever said that you really need to watch the episodes in sequence in order to appreciate it. I like the subtle humor and not quite always taking themselves so seriously.
Other favorite shows: Star Trek TNG and Enterprise, and The New Battlestar Galatica

“Rocketman” 👍 -it’s about man’s first setting of foot in Mars. It’s very hilarious tho. 😛

Has anyone here seen the movie?

I am going to make some atypical suggestions. They aren’t “space” movies or shows but they do revolve around aliens.
Superman I and II (He is from Krypton after all)
The first four seasons of X-Files (It seems to me that after about 4 seasons or so, most shows start to start a downward spiral that ends in mayhem)

I’m not really into alien movies (especially since they added the alien concept into the new Indiana Jones movie:( ) but these are my favorites:
Independence Day, Stargate, Predator, Star Wars and some of the X-files

first I have to admit I am surprised that no one mentioned the best SciFi film of all time Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner w/Harrison Ford as a detective, possibly a android, chasing malfunctioning androids or replicans. Rutgar Hauer was amazing as his adversary. How can you not like the line “Time TO Die”
Honorable mention goes to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001. A story that has you looking for answers even when the film is over. “My God its full of stars”

I must also admit I love the X Files as a TV show. I hated the last film.

I think it was mentioned. I didn’t because it isn’t set in space and doesn’t involve aliens.

it wasn’t mentioned and others offered movie choices that included only robots. I beleive this was a sci fi thread.

thanks for being so mean

Favorites:
  1. Star Wars (1977, opening night the line went all the way around the block. It was awesome. Saw it 17 times).
  2. The Last Starfighter (What can I say I grew up dropping quarters into arcade games).
  3. Battlestar Galactica (Television series premier movie).
There are more, but those are the ones that come to mind right now.

I did, actually, in post #14.

Though it takes place on earth, space travel is commonplace and the Replicants are essentially aliens, so it fits nicely.

I looked and looked and didn’t see it, but there it is right in front of my face. I stand corrected. Thanks! 🙂

Alien and Aliens.

Star Wars series is good too.

I can’t stand Star Trek.

All the Star Trek and Star Wars movies, but especially Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, Voyage Home and First Contact (from Trek) and Episodes IV and V (from Wars).

The first 3 Alien movies (which made me a fan of Sigourney Weaver). IMO the “Assembly Cut” of Alien 3, which is available on the 2-disc SE, is superior to the theatrical version.

Haven’t seen Superman mentioned. Remember, he’s from the planet Krypton. 😉 I plan to do a Superman I-II-Returns marathon sometime soon since December is the first film’s 30th anniversary.

I don’t care for Close Encounters. I think the way Richard Dreyfuss’ character abandoned his family was the turnoff.

This is a great thread.

My personal faves:

Movies:
Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan (“From death’s heart I strike at thee!” ooo! Ricardo so made that movie!)
Galaxy Quest (I recognized myself in the convention crowd!)
Alien (though I still think of it as horror)
Serenity

Series:
Stargate SG1 and Atlantis. Campy at times but good, though the series fell apart after Alan Dean Foster left.
Firefly–I can watch this again and again
Planates

I’m writing a sci-fi novel, Discovery, where the characters are going to explore the first-ever-discovered alien ship. they are traveling on a decommissioned luxury cruise liner that has an old-fashioned movie theater. One guy got the brilliant and fun idea of doing a weekly movie of sci-fi films with the purpose of analyzing them for the mistakes the characters make. They’d then use that to make better plans for when they explore the ship they’ve found.

Alien is a simple one–always have 2-man, never bring anything potentially alive onto their own ship…

What other movies have phenomenal tactical mistakes they could learn from? Give me the movie name and the error. If you want to make up a movie and an error, I’ll consider them, too. 👍

Trouble with Alien is that all the real SF readers knew what to do from the first: get in your suits, open the air locks.

Took Ridley Scott 90 minutes to get there.
