What is your favorite Star Wars movie and why? This isn’t for Start Wars bashers, this is for people who like the movies.

Return of the Jedi is mine. It wraps up the whole saga nicely and there is a lot of action.
 
Episode 4 has demonstrable re-watch-ability. My brother loved it and it was played every day for over a year in my house. Amazingly, it could still suck you in…

There’s Obi-Wan on the ledge trying to turn off the deflectors. HUUUUM! Wait! What about the stormtrouper? So you sit down and watch for a few minutes.
 
Yes, Episode 4 is definately one with re-watch-ability. It’s the first, a classic, and set new standards for making movies.
 
I’m interested in reviewing episode 3 when it comes out (on dvd). I want to see how that feels a second time around. I was greatly surprised that it worked so well. I have discussed with several people the significance of the fight where Windu dies and how that relates to the scene where the emperor dies.

Return of the Jedi is the best one, but I have not seen Revenge of the Sith. :eek:
 
I think Empire is the best, with Ep. 4 and Ep. 3 right behind them.
 
Return of the Jedi, but only up until they escape Jabba the Hutt. Once the Ewoks are introduced, it is downhill. 😛

For a whole-movie favorite, I’d have to go with A New Hope.

Was it just me or did anybody else notice how they tried to “De-spiritualise” the force??

As a young kid brought up a good catholic seeing Alec guiness et al using the force it was understood that the force was kind of a spiritual thing. Obviously the analogy shouldn’t be taken too far - but hey - give us kids credit - we were quite sophisticated enough to make the necessary distinctions… quite able to see where the cinema screen ended and where reality began (mostly!)

But anyway - in the later films they seemed to try and materialise the spiritual. The force became something to do with plant cells or something - I can’t even remember what - I think I immediately switched off at that point in the film - kind of saw what they were doing - heaven forbid we should awaken the spiritual in our children

Yes, I know what you mean - I have definitely interpreted the films in terms of my own catholicism. I think that the later films continue the themes in spite of what you describe as despiritualization. don’t give up on them. Return of the Sith especially is great in terms of the Force as the power of God in us/Jedi as Priest - after all, the Jedi have a “temple” which in aerial shots is in the shape of a cross. It demonstrates the need to put the force of good ahead of political and personal loyalty. It even makes a reasonably good case for celibacy in the priesthood! If I didn’t know better, I would think the author was catholic. I have found it a great stimulus for discussion with my teenage kids.
 
Yes, the midi-chlorians introduced in The Phantom Menace made a lot of people, including myself, angry that they tried to de-spiritualize the force. They made it something physical instead, as if it was trying to becime politically correct.

I will always interpret the original films as spirtual personally, though. Like in The Empire Strikes Back, the scenes with Yoda. It is a very spiritual thing. Yoda’s wisdom about the force was like that of a priest (ie. “For my ally is the force”).

Star Wars, at least the original ones, will always be interpreted as a spirtual thing.

It is interesting how times have changed, because Lucas had drawn from many different religions in creating his original story, which was why it was so well received by so many different cultures.

Someone told me once that they thought the change to the force was because there were too many people that were claiming “Jedi” as their religion.

Anyways, back on topic. I can’t really pick a favorite, other than to say I would agree the original three were better than the latest trilogy. Especially when you watch the first 3 in a single sitting, as a single work. Very good stuff indeed 🙂

For me it will always be RETURN of the JEDI !!!

When I watch it at home with my kids, I can picture myself walking to the movie theater as a third grader with my dad, and younger brother and sister. The movie was AMAZING to me back then. It was my first day of life with glasses, and I could actually see the screen. I was terribly near-sighted before and nobody knew… so it was like a whole new *clear *world opened up to me and I got to see Return of the Jedi all on one great day! Not only is it a great movie but very nostalgic to me. I loved the Ewoks and Jabba the Hut. PLUS there is a happy ending with the conversion of Anakin to from the dark side to the force!

Empire:

Best direction (because it wasn’t George Lucas), most character development, best use of real drama and storytelling. You could tell that Empire had the least involvement from Lucas, because it is the movie most capable of standing on it’s own merits. It was well written, well staged and had the most story of the first three movies (which means it had the most story of any of them since the prequels are about as deep as a puddle in my shower). Die hard fans always point to Empire as the pinnacle of the series.

I’m kind of bummed that someone mentioned the holiday special before I could. Now that was a prelude of things to come from the mind of George Lucas. shudder
 
It’s too bad I have never seen the Holiday Special. But from what I hear it’s really not worth the time it takes to watch it.
