why do movies that involve animal deaths etc upset us more than most movies with human death? Characters die in movies all the time, even characters we like, but most of the time it doesn’t break you down.

A sad movie with a dog or cat or something? Automatic tears.

I don’t think that’s necessarily the case. Movies where a child suddenly dies, like in an accident, affect people just as much as when an animal dies, probably more if the person watching has been a parent.

In cases where the death is an elderly person or someone who is terminally ill then usually the movie has them preparing for the death in some way or it’s somewhat expected because they were old or ill. Or they are fighting in a war so again you knew there was a chance they’d die. Or they do something to bring death on themself, like commit suicide or get killed committing a crime.

One thing about animal death is that the animal is often killed in movies in a way that seems very unjust, like the kid’s parents decide it needs to die for some reason, or it’s killed by nasty bullies, so it’s not just a case of the dog naturally got very old and died. The injustice is very upsetting. I think most people are just about equally upset by animal cruelty and cruelty to children/ elderly/ disabled etc because we know a person capable of violence towards an animal would do the same to a child or to another person weaker than them.

Turner & Hooch 🐕☠️😭

You mean “Bright Eyes”, the movie in which Shirley sang that to a bunch of pilots?
Yes, that’s the name.

My daughter is 20, when she was little she loved Shirley Temple movies. I think we have Bright Eyes on a VHS tape.

Lol I’m jk

Animals are so much more innocent than even most good human beings, and lack the insight into their suffering that we have, so it seems more unfair somehow

Personally, I always get a bit teary when it involves well-developed characters. That could be an animal, but often it’s not. That said, the most teary I got was Wolf’s Rain, but in that show, the wolves were little different than humans. Needless to say, in this image, each human is the same character as the wolf they’re standing next to:

Was that good? I thought the previews were very interesting. The title is a play on words . “Isle of dogs” sounds like “I love dogs”

Wes Anderson is weird. “Isle of Dogs” often pokes fun at itself with quotes like "I need to prove my conspiracy theory! " But it also has a message of loyalty that I found heart-warming. (Not exactly a tear-jerker.)

Just FYI and spoiler alert for those who haven’t seen it… in Yellow Dog, Far from Home, he LIVES!!! and that makes me cry, cuz, well I’m a sentimental person!

Edited to add: I just looked this up. It’s Far from Home, the Adventures of Yellow Dog, from 1995, and it’s available on Amazon Prime…

“Wonder”, absolutely…You’re not human, if this scene doesn’t get you in the heart…

Jelly candies, like gummie bears but in strawberry flavored strawberry forms

I had assumed you intended to type jelly beans but missed the second word. 😄

I’m not one who generally gets emotional at movies. But two scenes in particular come to mind (that haven’t been mentioned yet).

Spock’s death from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

The Grey Havens from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
