From what I have heard that is a fine one. 🙂

I love a number of old manuals, I cannot pick just one yet. There are so many more I wish to read. My St. Benedict Manual is quite wonderful… The Lasance books…
 
I have a prayerbook St. Augustine’s Catholic Prayer book. A photograph can be found in my profile under Albums & Pictures.

I have “My Prayer-Book: Happiness in Goodness: Reflections, Counsels, Prayers, and Devotions” by Rev. F. X. Lasance. The dates in it are 1908 and 1923, with 912 pages. It’s small in size, but chock-full of all sorts of good things.

I’ve found it in a book sale several years back; it had obviously been heavily used, b/c the scent of incense triggered my allergies intensely! Now the scent has faded to a gentle level. I use it for my daily prayers at home and before the Blessed Sacrament. I can honestly say I could find something new everything I open it. 🙂

You are lucky to have found it in a book sale! There are copies at Amazon used going for (cheapest) $49 and I just purchased it! Apparently it was also reprinted once, but could only found one copy of that, and I love old books.

So… you have a valuable resource to be treasured!

It’s quite a treasure isn’t it? I love thumbing through my old St. Benedict’s manual, or my reprint of Fr. Lasance’s guides for young people. His ‘Girl’s Guide’ is perfect for girls, and ditto for the boys.

And the illustrations!

Some of his books are available online. 🙂

But there’s no substitute for a real book. 😃
 
I checked out the Raccolta and Blessed Be God. I really was intrigued by the BBG but I didnt end up getting it. Its almost too good. What I mean is that I wouldnt even know where to begin, there is just so much “meat” in there. Im already doing the LOTH, Rosary (and Divine Mercy Chaplet), and daily Mass in Magnificat, that I dont know where I would fit it in!

There is about a 10 page or more intro on the Blessed Be God book that has a virtual goldmine of prayer helps. I really liked the book but I just know it will do nothing but sit on the shelf rather than be read as much as it should. I just have so many things!

Prayer Primer: Igniting a Fire Within

I am currently reading this, and find it absolutely incomparable. My pastor “assigned” this book to me in the confessional when he was giving me some direction afterwards. This book is amazing.

Transformation in Christ by Dietrich Von Hildebrand. He wrote this book while on the run from the Nazis. They put a death sentence on him because of his opposition to National Socialism in his native Austria.

These two books I have found especially helpful on the how and why of prayer.

I wonder how many active priests today use any of the traditional prayer books. Probably a small percentage.

I just received Transformation in Christ in the mail. I heard Marcus Grodi recommend it on his show Journey Home. It looks like a book to be read slowly, over and over!

Absolutely true! It is a fine book! Probably the deepest thing on developing a transforming relationship with Christ I have ever read. Of course, I have not read the whole thing. I just started it for my Lenten reading, and you are quite correct, one needs to to slowly and digest it slowly.
