We’ve tried to play this before, hopefully the forum stays up this time!

Who is your favorite TV or movie Priest?

Let’s just do the priest this time, no nuns and no brothers. We’ll vote for them in a seperate thread.

Mine is easily Father Ted Crilly from Father Ted. Anyone?

Gregory Peck in the Scarlet and the Black, as the monsignior in the Vatican who defied the Nazis to protect those who sought asylum there.

I also like Clifton Webb and William Holden as missionary priests in China in the years when the Communists were taking over, can’t remember the name of the movie.

The Mission with Robert DiNiro as the penitent soldier who defends the S. American natives from slavers with force, and Jeremy Irons as the priest who defends them with the Eucharist, is one of my all-time favorite priest movies.

the relatively recent TV movie with Ben Cross as the Franciscan priest in Asissi who hides Jews from the Nazis is simply excellent. There was also a movie, I think made for TV, about 10 yrs ago about a Polish priest who was murdered by the Nazis.

I have to say that I was very impressed with Donald Sutherland as Father Robert Koesler in The Rosary Murders.

If we could include brothers, I’d say Brother Cadfael, but since we’re not including brothers, I won’t.

I rather liked Bing Crosby’s Father O’Malley from Going My Way and The Bells of St. Mary’s.

By the way, I used to be A.M., senior member, but the hackers completely wiped out my account and I couldn’t re-register under my old name.

When the forums went down I lost my account as well. Back to square one.

The best all time movie/tv priest is Fr. Brown played by Kenneth More (and also by Alec Guinness in an earlier movie version). Fr. Brown was inspired by a real priest, Fr. John O’Connor, whom G. K. Chesterton greatly admired, although the fictional priest doesn’t look a thing like the real priest he is based on. It was Fr. O’Connor’s wit along with his deep knowledge of human nature, based in a thorough understanding of the Catholic faith, that impressed GKC to write about a fictional priest with the qualities he saw in Fr. O’Connor. The Fr. Brown mysteries are still available to read, and the Alec Guinness film, The Detective and the BBC series of Fr. Brown stories with Kenneth More, which are truer to the original stories.

I quite liked Campbell Scott’s portrayal of Father George Hibbert in Saint Ralph.

I used to enjoy Charles Durning and his appearances as the parish priest on Everybody Loves Raymond. He was funny, but not made fun of.

(I was going to say Merlin Olson’s Father Murphy, but he was only pretending to be a priest!)

Has anyone heard of/remember the movie “Becket”? It’s about Thomas Becket (I believe his name in real life was spelled differently) and King Henry II. Henry and Becket are great buddies, and then when the archbishop of Canterberry dies, Henry decides to make Becket the new archbishop, so that he can have power over the church and state in England. Anyways, when this happens, Becket, who used to be a sinner and against the Church begins taking on the duties of Archbishop. Anyways, him and King Henry II end up losing their friendship and Henry eventually has him killed.

I think that he would have to be my favorite movie priest :D.

While I love Father Ted, my favourite character in the show was always Father Dougal

Father Ted - definitely 😃

Father Dowling, OTOH… - & that nun - eek !

None other than Fr. Patrick Francis MulCahy of course!!👍

You know, from the 4077th MAS*H!!

“Father Malloy” ( Bing Crosby ) from movie, The Bells of Saint
Mary’s

**Robert Blake’s **portrayal of Fr. Rivers in Hell Town.

Definitely unusual and interesting to see an ex-con ordained to the priesthood to serve in a tough neighborhood parish.
