My favorite TV show of all time with a Catholic theme was Father Ted, an Irish sitcom in the 90’s. Dermot Morgan you were gone too soon!

I also like Grounded for Life, a U.S. sitcom from the early 2000’s.

What Catholic-themed TV shows do you like?

Hell Town with Robert Blake, Blake is an ex-con hired as a priest in a very tough area.

The Flying Nun with Sally Field

What is this fascination which “catholic television.” Wholesome programming with good moral vibes? you can find that anywhere. Programming that asks deep questions and provokes critical thought? Again anywhere.

Shows about Catholics? Kinda narrow and boring don’t you think?

You could say the exact same thing about any other subject.
Shows about _____? Kinda narrow and boring don’t you think?
Fill in the blank with doctors, lawyers, police officers, zombies, drug kingpins…

I beg to differ.
Then you need to tell me what you quantify as wholesome. Cause frankly atp is anything the whole family can enjoy without awkward jokes.

Shows about Catholics are boiled down to three chiches: Historical, interesting but not everyday consumption. Fictional historical: Some hypothetical event in the church that’s based on historical data.
Half baked veggie tale spin offs that feed this drive for “Catholic programming” for the youth.

That was one of my favorites of all time.

The series opens with observation through a telescope, seeing the drug deal, and running down the perps–by the priest, who drags them to the parish border and throws them across with a warning not to return . . .

I am getting a kick out of Living Biblically at the moment; it seems to draw the right balance.

I gotta say, I sort of agree. It’s fine to want to take in some Catholic themes, but if someone is demanding that everything they watch or read be explicitly Catholic, then yeah…that does strike me as narrow and boring.

Do “The Brady Bunch” and “Little House on the Prairie” count?

Good 70’s shows with family values.

Does anyone watch “The Middle”? Family series that just ended

I used to like Hell Town as well.

Not sure if it’s “Catholic themed”, but my favorite TV priest was good ol’ Father Mulcahy from M * A * S * H.

Lost
Breaking Bad
and The Sopranos

None of these shows are overtly Catholic but contain themes of sin and its consequences, free will, and one’s openness to repentance or their persistence in sin and death.

Catholic themes sure, but not in a positive way if I’m going to be honest (I watch it)

It would be nice to have a show like that. Most aren’t really that faithful to Church teaching.

Father Ted is a classic! I’ll occasionally watch Father Brown.

JAG was also created by Don Bellisario, a Catholic and Marine, and was based around the military’s ethics of God, duty, honor, and country. Maybe not the most Catholic of shows but one I enjoyed watching.

I LOVE the Father Brown Mysteries! 😍

Murderer: “So what do want me to do, Father? Turn myself in?”

Father Brown: “I want you to confess your sins and receive God’s forgiveness.”
